91 Yota 22RE 5spd's 91 Build up Thread
Okay, heres the deal. I bought my 91 Toyota from my ex girlfriends papaw knowing it had the problem of water and oil meeting somewhere within the engine, which I thought was a blown head gasket but many of people told me it is more than a bad head gasket. :'(. I have the exhaust, valve cover, and upper intake off of it. As most would be, I'm dreading taking the head off. (it has the 22re). But I've been considering doing a sbc 350 swap and being done with it, although I'm going to miss the great gas milage, but knowing I'm going to have the power that I like too! I'm open to ideals and advice right now. Will post pics tomorrow when I can get to my computer. (using wifes iPhone at the moment)

Okay, so plans has changed!
Instead of using a SBC 350, I'm just going to use my 1992 4.3L TBI engine. I junked my blazer due to way to many transmission problems. I kept going through the 700r4 tranys way to much. At one time, I installed 5 highly rebuilt trans, the last three being built with the best parts available, and still the trans kept failing. So, I yanked the 4.3L motor, Radiator, and ECU and put it up for storage until I was able to buy my adapters and such to put it in the toyota. So, Any input, advice, and information will be greatly welcomed! This should be a fun project and the 22re is one of the easier Toyota engines to work on. There is a TON of info on what others have done to trucks like yours. Do read up some of the other builds and see what others have done, then ask about tweaking that. Because just asking for vague advice really won't get you much. It's your truck, you'll need to "drive" the build of it. I know sometimes it's hard to know where to start.. but as I said above, start by looking at other builds and pick and choose what you might like to try!
Good luck! PS A BIG help will be to get the FSM (Factory Service Manual) for your particular truck here. If The 91 Mini truck isn't listed, the 90's 4 runner with a 22RE is almost the same! http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/index.html This will help you identify parts for tear down, re-prdering, and putting back together, as well as any wiring issues... |
Put the 22re back in.

Gonna agree ^^^^^ I'm sure there's plenty of people who have done the swap you speak of and blah-blah-blah.....but, you have a motor that was intended to be there, all inclusive I assume (meaning transmission and ECU are still where they are supposed to be). As a newb, I was able to do this motor, myself, using my books and my computer and the people here on YOTATECH as my references, and I'm driving my truck daily. Do what you want, but I'm all for keeping the 22re. |
See, The plan is to yank the 22re out, and save up some money and rebuild it, and beef it up a little, considering it has 200K+ miles on it. I'm a huge fan of toyota, but I want to put a chevy in it for right now, considering I know the 4.3L is a great motor. After I buy my 98 camaro after new years, I'm going to tear down the truck, and build a badass mud truck.

Gonna disagree. The 22R is a GREAT engine but severly lacks power. The 4.3 will give him all the power he needs as well as the reliability. My vote is the 4.3.

Here's a video of how my 4.3L sounds.
I was tweaking the timing. Put a new distributor in it, and was tweaking the timing on it. No pipes on it. Just shorty headers as of right now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GCnl0jxGmw |
