87 4Runner 22RTE Build-Up, **Lots of Pics**
Hello first time posting anything on here, but i wanted to document my build up of my 87 4Runner SR5 turbo. I owned this 4Runner since i was 19 with bad tranny and number four piston busted at the crown. About $300 later i had a working 22RTE and 5spd swapped into it from my brothers doner 4Runner. I got a couple years of service out of that motor before the piston failed again due to out of round bore.
Rather than rebuild it right my brother and uncle talked me into doing a 3.4l swap back in 2001. Purchased doner motor from 2000 2wd 4runner for $1000 swapped it in got the mechanical parts 80% done and did the wiring and found out that my ecu had a anti theft and i was screwed. Long story short, went to college, short on cashed while going to school and moved down from Minnesota to Alabama put the truck on hold ,8 years later I picked up my Runner up from my parents place and going to finish this damn swap and do a frame off restoration and solid axle swap.

- I did get the motor to start up and run. I got a video of it and some pictures of it running. No radiator in it just the minimum to fire it up and test if my wiring was correct.

thats a great story - and looks like you're going about it 100% correctly this time
I don't live near rust (thank God)....what are your plans to deal with all that crap?
And...have to ask....you don't happen to have an "old" 22RET thermostat housing lying around from a decade ago do you?
Good luck!

I just might have the thermostat housing. I sold the block, head and turbo while back but i kept the intake and piping. The catch is it is up at my parents so i will have to ask my folks about it, but i did remember seeing it when i was up there last month.
I am still figuring out what i am going to do about the rust. I sourced out replacement rocker-panels from a company in Canada for $80 each and last week I visited the local pull your parts and cut out a front radiator support from a rust free 85 2wd pickup. While i was there i scored 84 Cadillac Elderado calipers too.
I hope to get back there this weekend and cut out the floorpan from the 85 pickup. I still am working out in my head how i will exactly tackle the innerfenderwell/body mount location. The way the body is supported is fine enough to sit there but i am sure not going to work on it or get under it supported like that. I will have to come up with a way to safely support it and still have room to do the repair.
I should dig up some pics of the Runner when i first bought it and some after pics after i replaced the rear tub from a rust free one from Idaho and the paint job it currently has.

Thanks, man! NOT a rush but would really appreciate it if you could have them check out the T stat housing for me
So, are cadillac calipers 4 piston and plug n play with the mounting bolts and hoses? I've heard of V6 calipers being a clean swap (Toyota....), but that you also need a larger dual diphragm brake booster and larger master cylinder if you do it....

Here is a link to a video of me testing out if i did my wiring correct for the 3.4l swap. (Not sure how to post video's) I had to bare minimum connected and in fact i found out my fuel pump was seized up and so we had my buddy drive his 4Runner next to my and connect his fuel lines to mine. It still makes me laugh how ghetto rigged i had to it fire it up.

Last weekend I finished removing all the brackets for the front suspension and grinding flush. I need to weld in some cut/nicks on the frame. Relocated gas tank up 2 inches and factory skit plate.

Cleaning up the outside of the gas tank. Still need to come up with way to clean the inside and treat the metal, any suggestions?

Thanks, man! NOT a rush but would really appreciate it if you could have them check out the T stat housing for me
So, are cadillac calipers 4 piston and plug n play with the mounting bolts and hoses? I've heard of V6 calipers being a clean swap (Toyota....), but that you also need a larger dual diphragm brake booster and larger master cylinder if you do it....

No problem! I talked with my Dad and he is going to look for it this weekend. I will get back to you after this weekend.

Someone actually close... I'm just over in MS. Have you been to Barry's U-pull it in Mobile yet? Sometimes they have a few trucks and 4Runners. Cheap prices too, I got the front axle on my 4Runner for $75.

Looks like you are doing it right and getting quite a bit done. Seen you asking about treating the gas tank. In my second post on my build, I have alot of links and info on cleaning a tank. I have gotten over 7000 miles on mine now and no problems.
Looking forward to your build. Like what I have been seeing.
