The Start:
Just traded my beloved 1989 CRX SI for a 1995 Toyota 4Runner 4x4. Always been a tuner guy making this is my first Toyota and im already in love. This purchase has now become a build, rather a rebuild, with me getting to repair and replace all the items neglected by the previous owner (female owned for 7 years before me). 155k according to the non working speedo, Id guess thats almost correct given the fact all the body mounts are still are in great shape.

First day I owned it the snow started flying.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...t/IMAG0015.jpg

After the snow melted I set off with my wrench set. Started by replacing rear window , pulled off the stock step rails, pulled all door panels for cleaning, lubed all window tracks, removed the passenger seat, detailed the inside aswell as engine bay, installed front speakers plus cd player and got the outside cleaned up too.

http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...t/IMAG0020.jpg
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...t/IMAG0023.jpg

When I degreased the engine bay all the years of oil and gunk that fell off and revealed some problems such as an intake leak just before the throttle body. Also my fan bracket bearing blew up and put my fan into the radiator. So replaced radiator, fan bracket, full oil and fluid flush and replaced with fresh.

Fun at pull a part:

My goal is to return this 4runner to the reliable vehicle it once was with a few tasteful˟ mods such as lift, tires, bumpers, sliders, lockers, gearing.

The fan pulley bracket will be in today and I found a radiator on CL for $50 so I will be up and running by sun down if the weather continues.

While my radiator, pulleys, belts, throttle body and intake system were out I decided to fix my speedo. The cable had snapped so I will be installing a new one today, also fixing ebrake while im down there.

While I was checking the speedo cable i noticed I have a new poly bushings and a newer rear driveline under there...leads me to wonder what else has been done to this runner.

digitaldisciple 04-03-2012 07:16 PM

Today was a bust, weather sucked and so did the parts store. Somehow they dont sell a speedo cable but atleast i got the bracket and ordered my throttle body gasket.

The radiator on CL ended up being a bust but tomorrow im going to meet up with a guy with a full set of Bushwacker "cut-out" fender flares that im hoping to pick up.

Got a "special project" done today. Made a memory foam mattress that with the seats folded up is big enough to cover the whole "cargo area."

Lesson learned: Dont unscrew the 2 screws on top of your airbox.
Also throttle body cleaner will take off paint...and rust....and horrible stickers ;)

Jumped a tooth in timing so dealt with that with the screw driver trick, Everything is now back on and sealed up. Just waiting for daylight to put fluids in and fire it up. Picked up a set of rear tail light guards
New fan pulley bracket

New intake filter ....I found out my 4runner is a carnivore and it was eating bees thru the intake.

Popped out the dent in the rear passenger quarter panel. Looks leagues better.
Removed the Polk audio 5.25in speakers in the rear to solder the transistor back into place. Now have 4 fully functioning speakers :)
Got a set of newer BFG M/T 33x12.50R15's today. Picked em up with just enough daylight to get em on. Pics up in the AMhttp://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...ct/BFGTIRE.jpg

This is what happens when you put 33's on stock suspension!

Been too busy to update but been getting a bit done here and there. Got my BFG 33x12.5R15's on. Stock bumper needed to have the lower facia removed to clear the tires. Pressure washed the entire undercarriage to prep for my future plans of bedlining it. Put on one part of the Timing belt component kit by Goodyear I had purchased to solve the "diagnosed" problem. discover the tensioner bearing was going out and the "whirling" noise was still there. Lesson: ALWAYS PUT ALL THE PARTS YOU HAVE IN YOUR POSSESSION ON, even if you "know what it is for sure" lol
At this point im at:

New Battery
New oil, fluids and plugs
New Radiator
New Fan pulley bracket
New Timing Belt Component kit

Brand new battery with 5 year warranty. Pulled out the old broken speedo cable. Fixed the Polk 5.25 speakers in the rear, one of them had come unsoldered from the transistor. Checked the water pump, it was fine and it got a new gasket. Found one last bearing in the main crank pulley plastic housing (from fan pulley brackets bearings failing) while i was putting on the new timing belt. Gonna put everything back on and hope to god this is it.

I've got a 92 so am interested in what others are doing.

Did you notice any difference after you cleaned the throttle body?

digitaldisciple 05-22-2012 08:32 PM

Havent got it back on the road yet but im sure it will help in the scheme of things with all the new filters, fluids, etc. Probably not a big difference but it will prob help in the long run and thats more what im looking for.

digitaldisciple 05-23-2012 07:13 PM

Got it all back together and the wirling noise is gone so that problem is fixed.
Airbox MAF got broke so I gotta get a new one before it will fire up and continue running.

digitaldisciple 05-25-2012 04:01 PM

Made a trip down to pick a part. Speedo cable, brake check valve, MAF sensor, and a set of rear fender flares. Not bad for 30 bucks ;)

Got it fired up today for the first time since April and damn does it sound healthy! Engine runs good and idles solid. Its literally like night and day between how it did run and how it runs now so im pleased with the out come. Replaced the old spark plugs after it wouldnt fire up (gap was 50% more than what it was supposed to be) and BLAM! ignition!

Now that its running it exposed an oil leak and a coolant leak.
So..... onto fixing that BUT hey atleast it runs right ;)

ROCKGUARD 1 05-25-2012 07:56 PM

nice build there.

digitaldisciple 05-25-2012 08:00 PM

Thanks. Its coming along slowly but none the less, its happening.

digitaldisciple 05-26-2012 12:43 PM

After firing it up I found these issues.

Oil and Coolant leak:
Oil: I think the oil leak is coming from the crankcase breather, I wasnt thinking and put 5 quarts in when I changed the oil. Is this possible?

Coolant leak: I believe this is caused by one of the two bolts that holds the lower radiator hose on. There is tread on both sides with a nut that locks it in place, I dont think I got the thread side tight enough before the nut reached its end of the thread.
