SpecialScottie's 1985 4Runner Build-Up Thread

Finally got around to starting my first build thread.
This is my second vehicle. My 1st car was my 95 2wd 4runner.:banger:

I bought the beast a few months ago from an old man who only used it to store his junk in.
Here it is the day I brought it home. :hillbill:
240xxx miles and a blown engine
http://img377.imageshack.us/img377/5204/cimg5848kq9.jpg
I started by stripping the inside. It turns out that there were actually many spare parts inside

http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/9237/cimg5845lj4.jpg
I even found some change. Although it was covered in dog hair and mud :barf:

Ive got many plans for this old beauty. First thing I wanna do is paint it. I hate red

algranger Oct 21, 2008 02:11 PM

Wow that thing is clean. Seriously its got a straight body with very little rust, and the interior thats there is in great shape. Look at that dash no cracks or nothin. Looks like a great starter

Its all stock except for some 30x9.5 BFG all terrains. I believe the rear axle is the same one as on the 4wds so I wouldnt see a problem with putting a locker in. Although second gen 4runners can be had for about the same amount of money as a 2wd. So why not just start off with a 4wd? Plus you could swap over any good parts you might have invested from your 2wd.

Sounds good. Might be a while though :bang:. Everything I want is soo expensive

Did some rearranging today. I moved the 85 into the back yard where I will have more room to work on it and not have to worry about neighbors complaining that it looks like a junkyard :hillbill:
I also started stripping the outside in preperation for painting. I took off the turn signals and bumper and grill and things like that
http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/4294/cimg5882px3.jpg
I also moved my 87 parts 4runner into the backyard next to the 85 so I can easily transfer parts over.

Im deciding if I want the chrome bumper and grill off the sr5 87 or the black bumper and grill off the dlx 85.
Any suggestions? :bigok:

bigarms23 Oct 21, 2008 08:43 PM

i would go with the black grille and bumper combo also why not swap in a newer 4cyl motor from a tacoma

I was considering that. Is that a common swap? Are new motor mounts required?

becuase i got an amazing deal on the 2wd and my 2001 nissan frontier was totaled(hit in the passanger side by a guy running a red light) it was just 2,500 with 86,000 miles on it talk about a deal right i have done nothing to it but put some michelin 31x10.50s on it (the 4wd tire) i also am out of work till next semester so i cant afford another truck. However my dad has a 95 limited 4wd and i am hoping when it dies to either pull the motor out of mine and swap or yank all the 4wd parts from it and put them on my 94

904_runner Oct 22, 2008 02:20 PM

^For now, you could put a locker in it, but it would be probably best to wait until you get the 4wd.

You could always put a locker in it and swap the 3rd member when you get the 4wd. That is if the gearing is the same

Are you keeping it automatic or going 5speed? Every now and then Ill think to myself "man Dan, this would be so much more comfortable if the truck was an auto..." but that thought disappears quickly.

Im actually not sure yet. At first I was set on a 5 speed. But the more I think about it, it would be nice to have the auto. The auto tranny is in good condition. I think ill get it running and see how it does with the auto and then decide if I want to swap in a 5 speed or not :banger:
