NWTI's 85 4runner build up.
Hi everyone, my name is Corey,
I am the owner of Northwest Trail Innovations, I design plate steel winch bumpers and produce weld together kits for most popular Toyota 4x4's. We also are a distributor for Yukon gear and Engo winches.
Check us out at www.nwtrailinnovations.com What follows is the story of how I found my 85 4Runner and the build thats in progress.
I first noticed the 4Runner when I was with my wife and kids at the local Chinese restaurant here in Battle ground Wa. I looked out the window and saw a bone stock 85 4runner pull in the parking lot with a little old lady driving, the back seat packed full of teenagers. When she came in to pick up her order I walked over and asked if she wanted to sell the 4runner trying to hide my excitement.
She explained how she had owned it since 1986 and could never part with it. I gave her my business card and told to call me if she changed her mind.
I continued searching for a stock 1985 4Runner locally with no luck, all of the trucks for sale were wheeled out and badly beat up and either had sketchy homemade high steers or other worse badly welded suspension mods.
About one year later I received a phone call from the little old lady, she asked if I still wanted the 4runner, she had blown the head gasket and wanted to finally get rid of the truck. I tried not to get too excited, I told her I would call her back later. I went and talked to my wife about the truck and she thought the price was high for a truck that needed work. I explained to her how rare these 4Runners had become and how I could fix it and make a decent profit if nothing else. She agreed and we went and took a look at the truck. The truck had gray cloth interior in great shape, 398,000 miles on the body. It had just over one year on the new engine, a good 5spd, power windows, a tilt-o-meter, and all the removable top trim was perfect and had never been removed! I handed her the agreed amount, after she left I started it and drove it home. After we replaced the head gasket it ran perfect.
I have since done a mods, boomerang shackle lift a set of 32” tires off of my 01 tacoma double cab and a front NorthWest Trail Innovatiuons front winch bumper( if anyone is interested we are offering any of our Weld together Toyota winch bumper kits for a discounted price to members of the Yota Tech forums) . My future plans are, front and rear E-lockers with 4.88 gears 5” lift, 35” bfg km2 tires, I have a high steer kit I need to Install and possibly dual cases. This is my 4Runner build up.
