Great looking truck! What gears are you running? I'm thinking about starting the om617 in my runner trying to get real numbers on mpg.

Well I've logged over 5k miles since the swap so far, In need of more power I did a injector purge, cranked the boost up to 14lbs and maxed out the Alda valve. She definitely has more power now and can hit 80mph with ease:-). Overall I'm very happy with the swap, especially with the torque output, it climbed a very steep 60 degree or so 20ft hill in 4low and I didn't even touch the throttle, It just idled up it like it was no big deal. I'm about to get started on my flatbed build so stay tuned!

why does it look like the back side of your hood is sticking way up? And what tranny are you using?

I spaced the hood up with washers thinking I might run hot but my temps only get to around 160-170F so I'm thinking about taking them off. I'm running a rebuilt g54 5spd transmission.

Haven't shredded it, those tranny last forever if you take care of them. All I did to mine was replace a few syncros and all of the gaskets, it's still on the original 200k mile bearings and gearsets.

Still runs great, I did blow a 30yr old oilcooler line while exiting the freeway, that made a mess! The truck was only down for about 2weeks until the new lines came in, but other than that it hasn't had any other problems. I've changed my driving from 70mph to 60mph and I'm now averaging 26mpg mixed highway and city driving. I also pulled a 16ft pipe trailer with a 3000lb car loaded on it and still averaged 18mpg all highway driving at 55mph.

there are 3 fuel lines that come from the tank stock. What did you do there? Just block the extra one off and use the feed and return line?

The 3rd line is the fuel tank vent that originally goes to the charcoal canister for emissions. I simply have mine venting open atmosphere with a small filter on the end of it. It's prob not the best way to run it , especially if I had to cross deep water at some point but it does work

That's what I was thinking. I'm debating using my charcoal canister or just installing a check valve

Now that you have me thinking about it I will prob run it back to the canister with it's line hooked up to my airbox/snorkel with a check valve so that the tank can only have positive pressure not vacuum...

have you thought about gearing for better mpg? what RPM are you seeing at 60? IIRC those OM617's have a pretty high power band compared to most diesels and like to be around 2500 when cruising. a set of 4.56 or even a 4.30 set might help some, also make it feel a little more powerful..

Just curious cause i have been contemplating this swap my self for some time now

casebite - i just capped the fuel tank vent line off. The "gas cap" lets air into the tank, but not out, so as you burn diesel, air can enter in thru the gas cap and keep the tank from imploding.

ryan - Right now with 4.88's and 33's, my engine's happy at 55. I'm upgrading to 37's in 3 weeks just like I had planned and my sweet spot should then be at 62-63. Everyone told me I WAY over geared, but so far everything's working out perfectly.

I'm running stock 4:10 gears with 33" tires, I think it's almost dead on rpm wise. At 60 Its running around 2k rpm, the engine likes 70mph and I've had it up to 90mph just messing around. My best mpg all highway has been 29mpg going 65mph, while mixed driving lately has gotten me 26mpg going 60mph.
