Jrheingans 1981 SR5 longbed build
Hey everyone! This is my first build thread and can't wait to get started! I have finally found a good candidate for a resto/mod but I'm keeping it mostly stock. As the title says it's an 81 sr5 and for what I paid for it its in amazing shape I think. The original engine has 0 miles on it after being rebuilt as well as new clutch and hydraulics. It even has original sr5 chrome rims with hubcaps! Pictures coming soon!! Hopefully get to work on it this weekend!

Thanks guys!! Hope to be picking up today and I will make uploading the pictures #1 priority!! Also while waiting for pictures let me pick your brains for a minute... The guy said the factory tach is stuck at 1500rpm is this something that can be fixed or am I going to have to get a new cluster?

I'm fairly positive you can just add the tach, or replace the tach. Might be easier to just swap out the cluster if you can find a good one. Some years are plug and play some are not. I think for your years it is like 79-81 will have the plug ends you want if you don't want to rewire.
I don't tend to find tach's useful really at all so, if I was in your shoes i wouldn't make it a priority. certainly wouldn't be something I would rip the dash apart for.
This thread has some useful info for this. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f114...luster-220191/

Got the old girl home today!! Took several pictures and will load them up tomorrow!! And I can't believe it... The parking brake works!! Every Toyota I have owned never had a working one so this is a huge plus! Another question for anyone with the Nench type seat with the console cutout area... Is there a seat cover that will fit these trucks?? Thanks!

Someone has converted it to the rectangle headlights and grill but I'm going back stock with round eventually. Also have an sr5 bed to put back on it. It has a two wheel drive one on it now.

I'm fairly sure either before the 81 run or shortly after the run started they had the square headlights. Here is a link to toyota timeline.

Ok trying to make some progress on this beast so at least i can drive it around. Like i said it has the original engine rebuilt and original carb rebuilt with all smog equipment hooked up. All vacuum lines look to be in good condition or recently replaced. Engine runs perfect at idle and makes no strange noises or anything! Now i drive it in first gear- runs great. Go to second gear- runs great. go to third gear- runs great. Then as soon as i shift to fourth there is no power!! It will barely go 40mph and i cant even go fast enough to get it in 5th gear. What is this? im also going to post in the tech section and see if i cant get any help there. Thanks Yall! Also if someone with an sr5 with tach could post a picture of the wiring that goes from the cab to the coil to make the tach work i would appreciate that.

31x10.5x15
I wouldn't think these were too big to slow it down power wise.. I have heard of these trucks hauling much bigger! I'm still stumped on the issue. Because it seems to me if it were a vacuum leak then it wouldn't be idling or driving well in the lower gears

Yeah, 31x10.5 tires shouldn't cause you problems like that, but something does seem fishy. You have the understand that if the engine runs fine through the RPM range in 1st, 2nd and 3rd that is "should" do the same in 4th and 5th. The difference between higher gears and lower gears is drag and rolling resistance (ie-aerodynamics and tire size). Are those two factors enough to rob the power like? I would assume not, but you never know. I would want to know what carb are you running? Factory? Weber? What is the compression like on all cylinders? If you have low compression then it could likely be struggling to pull the higher gears. What does the clutch feel like? Does it slip at all when shifting the lower gears? The engine could be doing the work, but not getting to the wheels. Have you tried driving in 4WD? Better or worse? Should be worse, but you never know.
Throw out all the details and I'm sure that somebody will come up the the solution.

Thanks for all the the questions! I hope someone can help! Im running factory carb with all emissions and vacuum lines hooked up. everything is done correctly and no leaks that i can trace down. factory carb has been professionally rebuilt. Engine has been professionally rebuilt so i didnt check compression because it should be excellent! Clutch is brand new. no slipping. Have not tried driving in 4x4. Front axle has been rebuilt. Will try driving in 4x4 and post results. could bad vacuum advance cause this?

A bad vacuum advance could cause it, but it would cause it in 1st, 2nd and 3rd as well.
How do you know it was professionally rebuilt? Unless you did it yourself (and know what you are doing) or you know (and trust) the person that rebuilt it, I wouldn't rely on ANYTHING a previous owner tells you. I see so many people on here trying to chase down problems and fail to check the obvious because they are way too trusting of what a previous owner tells them - don't fall victim of that scenario
