82 toyota pickup

I've started a yota build, bought a pretty rusty '82 yota for $500. runs and drives fine but popped the hood and found the motor was covered in oil, the recirculate hose came off the air filter, could that be the leak? also the rad temp reads boiling hot but its been cooled off speedo dosent work either. just wiring? anybody have good ways to make a battery mount? have a classic b-cord on.

hey welcome aboard ..
I don't think the recirc hose would be the leak .. I would more think the front crank seal , I think that's the most common .
coolant temp is not something to mess with .. best to make sure of the coolant temp maybe with another gauge , or a thermometer .
I build new FRP battery treys .. chemical resistant , and never rust again
you can see it here , down by the bottom of the page

ok but I've left the engine off for a day and the temp still reads hot lol... and there is oil all over the inside of the hood, and correct me if I am wrong but I think the crank seal is near bottom.

I had the front crank seal spin and lost most of oil before shutdown from highway speed. The seal wasn't shot peened in place when installed. Threw oil all over the engine bay

Sounds like you have either a bad sender or temp gauge. Do a continuity on the wiring first, then check the resistance of the sender to see if it changes from cold to heated state.

Does the hose your talking about come off the valve cover to the air filter?

If so it may be blow-by. Which I had on my old engine and was very messy.

I rebuilt the engine. The blow-by got out of control.
