I'd like to learn more about Mk.III Supras. They seem not as reliable as other yotas, is that true? The HG seems to be a major issue. What kind of mileage do they get (when you're not racing )? Are they easy to work on? If you buy one with the HG already blown they're not too expensive. I'm thinking it might make a good first car for my younger brother that we could work on together (he doesn't like trucks), at least it would get him off the couch!

Toyotas are 98% reliable, but each model has their weak spot. The weak spot on MK3's is definitely the headgasket. It's one of those things that if you don't have it replaced, it IS going to give up eventually. Once you go to a MHG, that's it, no more problem, EVER.

Other than that, my Supra has been very reliable. As sports cars go, it's a heavy one, so it eats brakes like crazy. It's getting old, and it's had a few electrical gremlins due simply to old wiring. Also, it has alot more coolant hoses due to the turbo, and one of those popped on me once, but I got it home using a length of vacuum hose as a substitute. Other than those 3 things it's needed only regular maintenance, and I've put almost 100K miles on it (on top of the 100K I bought it with).

As far as gas mileage, if I drive it conservatively it'll do about 18 in the city and mid 20's on the highway. If you romp it alot, you can drop the city number down to about 12 mpg.

I would absolutely consider it for your younger brother. These cars are a real bargain in the $2000-3000 range, especially if you find a clean, STOCK, well taken care of specimen. Alot of people mod these cars without knowing what they're doing and really mess up the cars. Stay away from anything that looks like it was hacked up or modded without due care.
Great post, thanks a lot! Around here in the northeast, a Mk.III with a blown HG is only $1-2k, so after your info, it's definitely something to suggest to my lil' bro!

MKIII often look better then the MKIV imo.

I am just not big on the lowered look personally. I don't like it when the tires disappear behind the fender.
