Dodge Neon on craigslist? Deal?

Alright guys, bare with me here...
Ive got my Toyota which is my DD and for playing around just a little bit...
Ive always wanted something low and fast to play with, maybe take to the drag strip on the weekends...
So i was killing time on craigslist and i found a 1995 Dodge neon, 2.0, 5 speed manual transmission, Somewhere around 200HP, Cold air intake, Performance chip, and it got 38 mpg or so...he says its a pretty fast car.
It has 218,000 miles on it, and it burns about 1/2 to a full quart of oil a month. He says he believe's this to be because of the valves...
He says the water pump is bad, but he has a new water pump for it just hasn't had the time to put it on the car.
Im mechanically inclined so i do not see this being a problem...
Here's the thing...He only wants 500 bucks for it...:bah:
I think this is a steal, if nothing else i could put the water pump on and resell it for a profit!!! :D

Im definitely considering it, but i want yall's opinion...
Keep your minds open and let me know what you think...

Help me out fellas.

my fiance's brother has a neon, and its kinda a PITA to work on (maybe i'm just used to my yoters) but otherwise a $500 car can be a good deal (but then again it can be a huge money pit) I say for for it and see what happens. worst case you unload it again CL for what you have into it.

Thanks for your reply,
The way i see it i might be able just to put the water pump on it and sell it for more money if nothing else...
But with the new water pump, cold air intake and the performance chip...I figure that alone is close enough to $500 bucks...

I would stay away from it if I were you, but I have had nothing bud bad experiences with Dodge cars. I had a 1996 Intrepid that ended up needing 2 new motors and a transmission before it even hit the 75,000 mile mark. It also had a number of pointless smaller issues that cost even more like new automatic window motors, mirror adjustment motors, automatic radio antenna etc.

If something appears to be too good to be true then it probably is...I would not touch that car with a 10 foot pole, it would probably transmit some sort of disease that would cause otherwise reliable cars to start to break down.

There is a reason why you see alot of those cars in the junk yard and not on the road!.....and don't get me started on the intrepids.:ignore:

sigh…

Where do i begin,

a 1995 Dodge Neon doesn't have anywhere near 200hp, they are 150hp stock max. A performance chip will only make it run rich unless it's turbo'd. And 38mpg ha…… This is such a massive load of crap! It burns oil and has over 200K stay away, stay FAR away!! There is a reason he only wants $500. If you want a fast car buy my Camaro lol. But seriously stay away from this.

-You've been warned.

Yeah I gotta agree with the guys above me, i drove a plymouth neon for a little while and that thing was a POS, i'd say stay . . .

water pump and valves...have fun:D
Buying and flipping it, I don't see anyone else paying too much more for a 15 year old car with over 200K on the clock....

Especially a Dodge Neon...

Well...I think its pretty clear what i should do haha.
I haven't had ANY experience with dodges so i figured i would give yall an oppurtunity to yell at me for a little while, and yall never let me down :D haha.

I figured i could re-sell it for more then i put in it (Mexicans love little fast cars) bahaha.
But thanks guys!

This guy selling the car seems like he's full of crap, i really wouldn't trust him. And a 95' Neon runs a 18 1/4 mile (my friend took his to the track) lol they aren't fast.

Bojangles 12-07-2010 10:33 AM

Bahaha maybe i SHOULD buy your camaro.

highonpottery 12-07-2010 10:59 AM

how many Neons do you still see on the road? personally, i can't remember the last time I saw one. there's a reason why he still has it even though he's only selling it for $500.

Bojangles 12-07-2010 11:21 AM

Well the reason i posted it up here was because i have no backgrounds with dodges.
Also there are morons out there that sell things cheap because they have no idea how to fix them...
A buddie of mine got a 2006 model dirt bike for a few hundred bucks off of craigslist because it "was not running"...
He took the carb off, cleaned it out, put it on, runs like brand new.
