Nitto Dura Grapplers on 4runner....yes or no?

after several hours of searching here and teh internetz looking for new tires for the wife's 2006 4runner SR5, I came to the decision of very much wanting to buy the NITTO DURA GRAPPLERs.

I've read several reviews from several sites. I've read postings on other forums about their durability / handling / fitment.

I've decided on "upgrading" from the stock 265-65-17 to the (max size I have found will fit without any modification) of 265-70-17's (will be 1 inch bigger).

In my never-ending quest to get the best product for my money and doing so with the most knowledge about the purchase, I now come back to here to ask for some input from my trusted friends here on YOTATECH

The guys that know me, know that I am extremely OCD about certain things (or maybe everything) and I will circle my prey many times before striking.

Same goes here. Before I go ahead and pull the trigger on an almost $600 purchase, I would like some input.

In a discussion last night before bed, I was warned about the "E" rating of these tires in regards to ride comfort. Any "comfort" change for the wife will negatively effect me greatly in my personal comfort (IE:she will go on and on and on and on....about it)

search "DURA GRAPPLER" here and I can only come up with my own postings and the STICKIES from POST RELEASE.

If money were no object I would not be searching a much as I have been.

Basically, I'm not looking for tire recommendations since those will vary greatly. I've already had a list going and side-by-side comparisons based on LOOKS(wimpy highway tread or more aggressive) / COST.

So, guys, I'm gonna leave it up to you all to sway me one way or another. I have found it veritably impossible to find a negative word about these tires.

Please give me some input.

2006 4runner SR5 4x4 , 91,607 miles (as of right now). finishing off it's 2nd set of the Grandtrek AT20's. I almost never drive it. It is the wife's and sees an awful lot of highway miles, so that is definitely the consideration here......butt comfort......and my lack of comfort if I mess this up.

Jerry I told you how I feel. The e ratted nitto brand tires are a back sore on my 92. If I could do it over again, max I'd go is a D rated tire. Especially since you're not gonna have as much deflection with the 17's. Look for something in a lighter rating. For the sake of your "rok-rok" time with the wife.... Keep looking

fer sure I am basing this on that discussion.

if my understanding is correct, the "E" rating / 10 plys, is for "up to" 80psi....which sounds insane to me. before I started searching (key word) I never knew of anything higher than 35psi.

now, granted, her 4runner and my truck handle differently. her's is more luxurious, mine is almost punishing to drive. designed for different purposes as well.

as I would NEVER,EVER disregard what you are saying, my trusted Russian friend.....but I am hoping that someone would come out and say "i'm running these on my 4runner at 38 psi and I have zero issues with comfort".....or completely the opposite "I have these and I hate them".

I run mine at 35 for best gas mileage but have run then at 28 front 30 rear and still a jarring ride. They are e rated for carrying a higher load. Like 3000lbs a tire. The only time you'd run something like 80 psi is if you were carrying that full capacity per tire.

If you were closer, I would sell you my 265 70 17 muds and stock FJ wheels for $600.
Very smooth riding, but very loud.
Same tires I am running now, but my new ones are 285s.

I just can not ship these, to much involved for me to do.

As Vital stated...just because they say 80psi doesn't mean you run them that high all the time. You'd be fine running at 32 or so, at least until you load it up add a trailer and a roof mount cargo thingy. Then maybe you'll have to run 40psi or so.

With the Sentinel running at 32 rated E you might be alright, your 4Runner is a bit heaver than Vital ride. If you're that worried about it grab the Dogs C rated . $10.00 per tire more then you get the tread you want and she gets the ride not changing.

You have quite the conundrum here.
