New here, 1991 4x4 help with tire sizing please

Hi y’all. First post and yes I hate to admit it’s a tire size question and I beg forgiveness for it but I’ve given myself a headache looking through old posts and searches.

I thought I had this sorted out but evidently I do not. New-to-me 1991 4x4 extended cab DLX pickup, bone stock. Researched tires to death it seemed and decided to order 31/10.5/15 from Discount Tire dot com. Got there at my appointment time and was told they couldn’t mount them on my 6” stock rim. Is this accurate? I swear everything I’ve read says this is totally acceptable sizing. Hell, even Discount Tire’s website gives two different sizing options. If not, what size CAN I run? 30/9.5/15? Do I need a bigger wheel to move up tire sizes?

Appreciate the help. I know I’m new here but not new to forums, I know how annoying these questions can be to senior members, but I cannot find a straightforward answer. Cheers.

Discount Tire is terrible, and expensive! And it sounds like they gave you bogus info too. I've been running that size on stock wheels on several different Toyotas for about the last 15 years.

I used to go to the big-box stores, but then started ordering them through 4wheelparts (they have great deals on KO2s in that size throughout the year), then I go to the local hispanic tire shop and pay $40 to have all four mounted and balanced.

Could it be because of the offset, or something must be wrong with your particular store?
I bought Cooper AT3 31x10.5x15 from Discount Tire Direct on Ebay (saved$100) and had them delivered to my local DT CO. shop. Mounted with no issues to my 2nd-Gen 4Runner 4-spoke alloys.
