Starter problems 350 in 91 4runner
 

I am swapping a Chevy 350 into a 91 4runner and I am keeping the stock R series tranny. I bought the adapter bellhousing from Advance Adapters. But I bought the starter from Summit. I have the 168 tooth flywheel and I was told by Summit that this starter would work with that flywheel. The problem I was having was that the starter gear was jamming with the flywheel. After a lot of struggling and shimming and machining, I got the starter to work. Since my truck isn't running yet I haven't used the starter a lot but just enough to know that it was working. Today I filled the oil and got the distributor wired. when I tried to start it, the starter gear jammed with the flywheel once again. Now I am really confused as to why it would happen again after if was working just fine before. If anyone has any answers pleas let me know.

i had the same prob with my 70 impala did u use the stock diaganal bolt pattern or did u go straight across one of my bolt holes was cracked on the block and its the same results as u

Hey thanks for replying. I actually figured out the problem. There was a shim behind the flywheel and I also had the wrong starter. Got the right starter and chewed all the teeth off the flywheel. Pulled motor, put on new flywheel without shim, and works good now!

so hows your swap goin im looking into a sbc 350 i got the motor flywheel. but if i get my motor swap first my sas will have to wait u think it can be done with ifs and a 6 inch lift?

My swap went fine with the exception of the starter. But the motor itself however is not going so well. Blown headgasket, bad compression, worn timing chain, worn cam etc.. Lesson: Make sure everything is good with your motor first! Yes it should work with your setup. If you go to advanceadapters.com you can look at their catalogs and instruction manuals. In that, they tell you what is needed as far as suspension lifts, body lifts etc. From what I have read, the main problem with this swap with IFS is the oil pan to diff clearance. Look at their catalogs before making any decisions. Also decide which trans you want to use. I would rather have used a th350 or th400 with dual toyota cases or an atlas. With a v6 toyota trans you cannot do dual cases without special adapters. Do your research and make decisions from there. Good luck and keep us up to date.

You need atleast a 3inch lift on your truck to keep it away from your ifs, now I do know that they usually say you also need some kind of body lift to clear the engine from the fire wall and the hood. It will be a REAL tight fit.

well i plan on doing a sbc swap but im growing egger to drive my 4runner so i picked up a free 3.0 from work so ima throw it if for now and gather my parts for a sas and sbc swap plus my bdays comming up and my wife bought me a ARB snorkel hell yea!!!!

Very nice! I do not have a body lift on mine but I do have SAS. My bellhousing is very tight against the firewall. So tight that I cannot get to the bellhousing bolts. To pull the motor I have to pull the trans with it. A body lift will definitely help with that.

So things in life have changed had to sell my snorkel and my sas kit gunna stick with iFS for a bit got all my 350 swap kit almost gathered up so far I have bell housing from AA and their motor mount kit and clutch and slave and I need to get my flywheel turned I got a 153 tooth flywheel from a 82 camero

My current SBC Toy has an SM465 but in the past - I've always used a short shaft turbo 350. Bolts right in.

So it's just the bell housing that is close to the body with out s body lift right? Wat about the dizzy for clearance wich is better a HEI or a points dist?

I'm trying to find out the best headers to use for my 350 Chevy to '89 extra cab. Still running all Toy,Marlin and Trail gear stuff,otherwise.
