sas/ engine swap
hey, i have a 92 toyota p/u single cab/short bed.

obviously fromt hat list i'll be doing a chevy 4.3 swap but I also have a Buick 350 laying around with only 26k and only thing i'll need to change would be 4.88s to 4.10s and then get a Taurus E-fan, $80 chevy to bop trans adapter and perhaps snag some turbo 3.8 stuff to convert to a serpetine system?
both engines weigh 450 lbs 350 has slightly more hp and tq along with being at a lower rpm range 350 has 26k compared to 150k on the 4.3 4.3 has TBI instead of a 2barrel buick engine has higher nickel content in the block 4.3 has roller cam? so no need to zddp additive What would you guys do in my position( i'm a big buick guy) but not sure if the v8 will overpower the truck and break /over heat(buicks run hotter then chevys) and might be an inch wider/longer/taller then chevy 350. |
If you like to give it lots of gas off road, I think you are going to break your rear axle with the 350 or the 4.3. I would also worry about the front differential as that will become the expensive week point in the front axle once you put the longs in.
If you like to beat on it you may want to look into 1ton axles, stock they are about as strong as built Toyota axles and you can always increase the strength. The main drawbacks are clearance, weight, width. A diamond axle will help with clearance and width but they are still heavy. If you want the axles to remain Toyota I would look into the 8.4 tacoma differential for the rear and a 8.4 or high pinion for the front. The 8.4 would require a lot of modification but the high pinion bolts up. Both of these differentials are stronger than the V6 differential. Next year I am going to have a diamond built for my rear axle it is going to have a 8.4 differential and FJ80 outers making it full floating with factory disk breaks. This will be a lot stronger than my current V6 rear axle but still be light enough to daily drive. |
I have 30 spline longs with hub gears,
and both are low output engines Buick 350 SAE net 155hp @4200 and 275 ft lbs @1300 350-4v 175 hp@4600 and 300 ft lbs@2400 Chevy 4.3 150-165hp @ 4000 and 230-235 ft-lbs @ 2400 toyota v6s 3VZ-E 150@4800 180@3400 5VZ-FE 190@4800 220@3600 you really think these engines would break a stock rear axle and a built SA axle? I mean I guess if i drive gas hog stupid creating binding/hopping I guess it'll twist the rear tubes/break birfield over time.. |
We have talked on Marlins site. I run the 200 HP 4.3 CPI and my rear axle does just fine spooled. I have yet to find the weak spot in my 4.CPI/700R4/4.7case setup, but I am sure I will.

People break the rear axles and differential with a 22re. It depends how you drive, I run 37 MTRs on stock birfs but I am easy on the gas. It would just suck if you had a lead foot and kept breaking the rear after spending a lot of money on it. I just hate to see people that build toyota axles only to sell them for 1/2 of what they paid because they need 60s.

I have a 350 in my 81' and the front springs are de-arched, somewhere I have seen "Heavy Duty" springs made just for this situation. Anyone know where to get'em?

Trail-gear.com makes heavy duty front leaf springs about 299 a pair. might be 199 i cant remember at the moment. What tranny are you running?

You will be fine at 35's. Don't gas it hard when you are bound up, and it'll be fine. People blow up 8" stuff with 22re's, but generally with 37's and bigger. If you are worried about it, put in a 9.5, or a dana 60 out back.
