350 swap chevy trans

im on a really tight budget and parts will have to be purchased over time

What i have is a 1992 toyota 4 runner with 227k miles purchased and what owned in new mexico between valve seals leaking and some electrical issues it needs to be completly gone through i have a captain slow 3.0 and its beneath me to put any more time money or effort in to this motor and engine harness for little to no gain

Truck(4runner) is currently sitting on a 1" lift cups/bj spacers in front and rear on 33x12.5

Steps leading to the v8 (im getting 10-12 mpg with auto and the 33's with captain slow can't be much worse lol)

So 3" body lift, motor i have an eye on is a 1993 tbi with trans 200k+ on ticker so a refresh kit with pistons trans rebuild, efi harness, starter relay, efi computer, motor mounts, block hugger headers, trans cross member...

Things im unclear about
If its a 700r4 or 4l60 a trans adapter and what transfer case? what am i missing?

Doing an unconventional swap like this has a lot of room for error.

You have motor mounts to think about.

Cooling, are you using the original rad? Does it provide enough

cooling capacity. Are you running an electric fan? How will you plumb it? A 350's inlet and outlet are in different locations then a toy motor.
Other accessories, a/c, PS pump, alternator, etc. are you using toy or gm? Fuel delivery toy or GM?

Unless you have a lot of donor vehicles it's the small stuff that eats you up on these conversions.

I would do a ford 5L or 302cid with a matching transmission, then a AA adapter to the Toyota xfer case.

The engine has the distributor in front which is a big advantage over the chevy which has it in the rear. My '88 4runner had a 4" lift to accommodate that swap, along with mount adapters.

Don't go crazy with engine power, the Toyota drive line can take only so much. Also I would build the engine to "back in the day" standards so you can minimize any wiring or other stuff that can drive costs to the moon.

I have an SBC on the engine stand now, nothing crazy. 1996 - up Vortec with a .513 lift cam and its pushing $2,500 my cost. But it runs a one wire HEI and alternator. plan carefully its way too easy to over budget in the blink of an eye.

Whats unconventional about a tbi 350 swap? Fuel system on the 4 runner is walbro 255 it should be more then enough to push 300 hp? Im planning sub 250 hp so the stock front diff should handle that under dd abuse i put on it 90% of the time)

What about power steering and a/c you mean you don't remove yours?

Water pump and alternator is all i care about functioning (eventually i want dual 200+amp alternators gm 1 wires)
2 winches, driving lights, stereo, so i won't be installing ac or power steering at any point

radiator is one of those that has to wait till i can guage room obviously the thought is using a stock gm radiator with flex-a-lite fan...

I thought about a 5.0 but i would have to cam it and spend more funds to get up the power... And getting a 5.0 4x4 f series here is harser then chevy 350

The 350 tbi with head rebuild should be that same $$$ when done i don't have the patients to build heads so ill have to send those out to rebuild (stock)

The motor has not been purchased yet and i am currently talking with another guy about a 1994 s10 thats running and driving (4.3 v6)

So i haven't made final choice on motor i dont need 300 hp but i would like to pass cars on the freeway

Will a turbo 350 bolt to the 4.3?

Obviously i cant stand the 4l60-e they ruined the 4l60/700r4 with that thing

skypilot 04-28-2015 06:21 PM

350 swaps are common, they just require money or donor vehicles and some fabrication. All the stuff you want requires a bigger alternator; and wiring.
The radiator will have to be a custom unit to fit in the stock opening. Also you will probably need to go to a pusher type electric fan since the space is tight. its the little things that burn your wallet.

Nothing wrong with a 4l60E, I have one in the Yukon; runs like a charm after the valve body was overhauled and the corvette servo put in. I have a 700r4 that ran fine in 1990 scottsdale till rust killed the frame. Its just not meant for drag racing. It does however have a good first gear for rock crawling.

4.3 swaps are common too, but YMMV

I have a th350 and xfer case from a flood truck, or some such (have not stripped them to be sure) laying on the floor if you want. They are certainly not worth shipping.

Lol oh your assuming i would do a full motor and trans swap with out a running driving doner hahaha... Yeah that'll never happen i like ace hardware and napa but not that much lol..

I have swapped engines before its that usually i have another vehicle i can drive to and from work in the interm of the process of having the truck apart this time around i have a temporary loner interm so i need to have as many of the parts available on hand when i start the process
