real CA swap info needed
I have been thinking about a diesel swap into my 89 4runner and have recently aquirred a om617 turbo diesel. I have seen all kinds of different info online from just fill out statement of facts up to taking it to smog ref and getting it all inspected. I know the engine is supposed to be same age or newer but if i only need to have dmv check it i dont think it would be an issue. its alot of work to go through to not get it passed. any real world results would be great. i saw a couple swap threads on here but both end without telling if the got them registered. thanks for any help.

WOW. that's funny. I am in the same boat and my runner looks a lot like yours. I think the DMV check this is BEST case, got totally lucky, scenario. I am looking into the OM602 as it is newer than my '89. There was an 87 bar'd runner for sale in LA that had the OM617. Though, his motor likely wasn't out of an 87, they were at least available in 87. It seems like the rules are LOOSE with each Ref making a lot of the call on their own. The state rules are pretty cut and dry, but it seems like the ref has a lot of discretion about enforcing them.

there is a company in stockton that does swaps like this and they said that you just have to go to dmv fill out statement of facts and have them check that its diesel, no ref needed since pre 98 is smog exempt.

Really...?What's the company? I'd love to call and talk to them. Doing the OM617 swap would be WAY simpler since all the there is no adapter plate or info on the OM602. Not to mention, it will cost me quite a bit more for the motor itself.

I will know soon enough. I will be getting your kit soon Joe and going for it. I am going to smog one last time that will give me 2 years to figure it out. I will be emailing you in a month or so.
