OM617 should I start with 4cyl & W156 Trans or 6 cyl with R series

I have a conversion kit and complete running donor car but would like to buy another truck to do the swap with instead of the one I already have. Should I look for 4 cyl truck with weaker W156 series trans or look for 6 cyl truck with stronger R series trans ? The 6 cyl truck with R series trans and transfer case will need slid back and lengthen front drive shaft and shorten rear. This truck will be used as a daily driver and if there would be any off road use it would not be aggressive or very abusive use at all. I would prefer to start with 4 cyl /. W156 if trans will hold up OK.

Use the 1.4kW starter from the "Cold Weather Package" option on RockAuto for the W56. The R150 can use the 1.8kW from a 2004 Tacoma 3.4L

Opt for the R150/V6 truck. The R150 is much stronger and a better candidate for the daily driver. The W56 has a weak 5th gear, which doesn't matter if you're only rock crawling it, and the gear driven transfer case makes it the clear winner for rock crawling. The R150 has a much stronger 5th gear setup, and since you won't be doing any hard-core rock crawling, the chain-driven transfer case will suit your needs just fine.

To clarify on the R150/OM617 swap, the rear driveshaft needs shortened (which is much cheaper than lengthening a shaft). The front has enough play in it that you don't have to touch it.

Hope this helps!
