anyone swap a 4bt?

i am wanting to do either an imported toyota diesel or a 4bt swap into my 95 4x4 truck. just wondering if someone here has done the 4bt, the toyota swap seems fairly simple.

4bt is avery heavy motor. i would try a kzn 185

I don't know that I'd say the toyota swap is fairly simple. It has a lot of wiring things to do and you have to make/weld the motor mounts. It does run like nothing else though!

I can't remember where, but I saw a picture of a Toyota with a 4BT. It wasn't finished but the engine was in place. It looked like the turbo-to-intake crossover pipe came out above the hood line.

I almost scored a box van with a rebuilt 4BT for $1200. I would have found a way to make it fit. It's an impractical choice, of course. Must weight over 1000 pounds.

Don't get a kzn185 get a kzn130. It will have the passenger side drop. I have done the 3.0L TD Toyota swap and like 91diesel said they sure go and run great. Mines got 300000kms on it and still when I change the oil at 3000miles its still on the full mark. Barely any smoke and you got tons of power. Also sounds very mean with a straight pipe but is loud with one as well. At least for my taste. I'm bout ready to go weld in a muffler I was just waiting for the exhaust to cool off.

I have seen a 4bt into a LandCruiser. It was tight. and dude was getting like 20 mpg or not much better. and it weighs 750lbs. research and you will see most people dont think its practical or useful to put a 4bt into a mini toyota. research 1kz toyota diesels.

I hear what you guys are saying, i am just having a hard time finding information on diesel swaps. i remember a couple of years ago i was surfing ebay and saw a hand full of half cut trucks and 4runners, but now i can't seem to find to many importers that handle them.

22REFORME 06-06-2008 05:02 AM

I guess after looking through the engine options i'd probably be interested in one of the 2L motors

Blizzard 06-06-2008 08:51 AM

As you've to search an engine, search for an 1KZ-T, here we have both and there's a world between the 2L-T and the 1KZ-T...

Mine pulls amazingly and it's 320000km... Added an intercooler, 3'' mandrel bent SS exhaust and rebuilt the pump and injectors...

4bt swap

Dude, I am wanting to do the same thing. I am running through 22re like left and right. I have been told its not an easy swap but its not as hard as it seems. I was also told that some isuzus come with that engine. If you could find one then turbo it it would probably be a cheaper route. I was thinking either of a 4bt or just putting a toyota v6 in my pickup.
As for the toyota diesel its kinda hard to find them in the US. The best place to look is military yards when they decommission the vehicle. At a naval base in VA I found 2 toyota 4 doors with the 2.4D in them. But getting them is a different story. If you know someone in the military they can go on a website where the vehicles are auctioned and you could try that. But good luck.

4bt is a factory TURBO diesel. Hence the "T" in the name.

No, they came with ISUZU diesel engines, some had a simmilar NAMED engine like Isuzu 4BD-1T. The Isuzu NPR truck is the most popular.

why? cause you sold the yota

crazy_85 12-19-2009 08:48 AM

I've worked with both engines the izu motor is less swap friendly when in confined quarters intake and exhaust are on the same side of the motor and make it difficult to swap .... the hino (toyota) version has a better set up ... we swapped one into a suburban, thing has tons of power.
but the weight issue is huge you would definitely have to crank the torsion bars to level the truck out.but for drive quality its beautiful.

ide like to to see a finished product, i think ive seen some where the 2L-T uses the same motor mounts for the 22RE. but check those engines out, the lastest one has direct injection to i think.

i know this is an old thread but, where woud you even get the new 3.0l TD from. other then then Merc diesel. what others could you possibly swap that are going to give you enough power with out all the weight of a 4bt?

i like the idea of having the new 3.0l which i would do if i could get my hands on one.

i am in the army but i have only heard of the auctions that someone on here was talking about but i ve never really been able to find one.

kindziera 02-04-2010 11:42 PM

i know this is old, but ive seen 4bt's push over 400 hp, but thats not what a diesle is about, its about the touqe. and theres a lot of it

dieselcruiserhead 02-05-2010 09:39 AM

I have done a couple 4BT swaps and I think it could work in a pickup but it would need a lot (like 6" of lift). They are about 850 lbs loaded so pretty heavy. They do go into Land Cruisers really well but I would be hesitant in a pickup but it will work..

redneckzombie21 01-05-2012 05:17 PM

i got the 4bt Cummings in my 86 4x4 works great i have pulled a few heavy trailers just fine just dose not stop good with out the engine brake. installed the engine brake (jakebrake) works good. i have put 28,000 since i did the swap and haven't had any issues. except when i raced it the last time i launched at 2,500 rpms and broke 1st and 2nd gear in the trains. got a heaver duty trains and its going just fine

The auctions they are talking about are all online. They are open to the general public, so anyone can bid. The website is www.govliquidation.com and they usually have a pretty good crop of vehicles and equipment on there. I havent seen much in the way of diesel's though. The other thing is that you are required to pickup or arrange transpo within 10 days of auction end. They give you a list of haulers, but they arent cheap.

Who knows you might check it out, get lucky and score a sweet deal! Bidding starts at $150 and usually dont go much past that because most people either dont know about it or they think that its only for the military.

Also, National Guard HQ for each state usually does some sort of public auction every year or so, you might be able to give your state HQ a ring and ask them. Im a 1LT in the VT Guard and I know they had an auction this past summer. Worth checking out if you wanna cruise down your hometown streets in a deuce and a half or a HMMWV!:bllama:

Post some pix here when you try to do yours so we can look at them if you don't mind.
