93 4runner om617
Hi,
I have a 93 4runner 3.0 auto, and I am preparing for the om617... The 3vze has a cracked cylinder so this is a perfect occasion for the swap.. I am currently looking for a good om617, so I have a few questions just to make sure I have all the parts needed... 1. Can I use the stock v6 starter? 2. Is there enough space to leave the stock radiator i the stock position, and install an electric fan in front or even just use the AC fan which is already there? 3. I suppose that the front ifs diff. is not in the way, and I have the front diff dropped by 1,25" so this is even better? 4. The only thing on the "way" is the steering rod and the solution is to modify the oil pan... Do i have to modify anything "inside" the oil pan? 5. I have a CNC, and I was thinking of machining the adapter plate of aluminium.. What thickness should i use? Thanks for your time.. |
1.yes
2.yes, but the ac fan doesn't move enough air 3.plenty of room 4.nope,but you will have to relocate the steering stabilizer 5.5/8 and good luck! |
I bought a 617 952 engine..
Now lets get to work... I am not sure that it will fit without relocating the stock radiator... The gearbox is just too much forward.. I will need to push the gearbox back or relocate the radiator...? Why no one uses the mercedes alternator which is already mounted on the engine? |
I used TDswaps motor mounts and had to move the transmission mount back by about 1.125". This allowed me enough room to fit the Mercedes radiator in the stock toyota location. I have less than 1/2" between the water pump and the radiator, which I hope is enough.
I believe some do use the stock mercedes alternator, although many upgrade to the higher output Bosch 129X series alternator which fits in the MB mount with little modification. I was planning on doing this until I found TDswaps kit which has a bracket to maintain the toyota A/C compressor and move the alternator over to the drivers side and uses a CS130 style one wire alternator. I have a brand new Bosch alternator. If you are going to go that route, let me know. I already opened the case to add a tach sensing wire, so I can't return it. |
Check my build thread. Mine was a V6. I moved the trans/transfer case back and pushed the rad forward because I hate electric fans. The pan will have to be notched to clear the center link. Dif clearance is not an issue. I didn't use the Merc alternator because the toyota one is almost a direct bolt on. Oh and for the adapter I used 1/2 inch steel.

Thanks for the answers..
I am currently cleaning and painting the engine, and preparing all the things that i need... I am planing to push the gearbox back as far as i possible so the valve cover can be removed... I am planing to leave the toyota radiator in the stock position, and use electric fan in front... I hope it will fit... I have the AC in the 4runner but the compressor is leaking so I am not sure that i will even bother trying to mount it because i would first need to repair it... this is not my priority right now... I believe that the most challenging thing will be to get the auto transmission to work like it should... But i like challenges...:rockin: I have a few more questions... 1. Can the oil pan be removed when the engine is in the car? As I can see the only thing on its way is the steering rod, so if i remove the rod I can place the engine in, so i can see and measure how to modify the pan for the rod.. 2. when I modify the oil pan do I have to modify the oil pickup? |

Basically the way I did mine was cut the pan so it was right against the pickup tube. That is exactly enough clearance. It ain't much but its there.

3.0 auto
I have a 92 4runner 3.0&auto where can I find adapter for 617? Need help with any details avalible on this swap, will be wife's ride!

Hi,
I will be cnc machining my own adapter.. Maybe I can make one for you if the shipping cost from croatia is not to expensive.... Currently i am modifying the cross member so that the trans. is pushed back by 4,7" (120mm), when this is done I can put the engine in... I am building my own ecu for the trans, because I am not sure that the stock will work without the 3vze "connected" thus is the same ecu... I would likely have to make the 3vze distributor spinning with the om617 engine because there is the crank position sensor... and I want to be able to manually shift the gears (+ and - switch) and manually use the converter lock-up.... this is the bigger reason for me... I will put some photos of the progress.... |
I'd pay $20 for the file to run that adapter on a CNC mill or waterjet and save me the time of creating it myself. Let me know.
|
You wont be able to waterjet it. I will sell you one for $55
|
You take paypal? I get paid friday.
|
Yes I do, your adapter plate will need to be 5/8 thick to use my crank adapter.

3 Attachment(s)
Hi,
Some update... modified crossmember.. Attachment 154259 adapter.. Attachment 154260 ready for instalation.. Attachment 154261 Toyota radiator is in its original position, and it seems that the ac fan will be enough to cool it down...I used the toyota PS pump and alternator and made the mounts so that they are located in the drivers side, the other site is for now empty, and i am planing to put there the AC compressor one day... I had to modify the oil pan and the pump pickup too.. The engine is in, all connected and it started for the first time.. I am currently finishing building my own transmission ecu, and when i finish I can make the first ride while manual shifting using the cruise +&- buttons on the steering wheel... I am hoping that it will all work as it should... |
