QuickSilver's 3.4 swap 99 runner into 90 runner
i finally got started on my swap after collecting what i hope is the majority of the part i will need. i picked up a nice 2 owner 90 runner locally for $500 that is in great shape for it's age. i then got a wrecked 99 4runner from a buddy that was an unfinished project that had a jeep body that was half way installed then left to rot. i had about $800 in it and he kept the jeep stuff and i got the frame and all the drivetrain with harnesses and computers.
this is the day it was towed home with my then newly rebuilt 89 pickup http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/0f2d1aad.jpg http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/bd7c9810.jpg http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/f4e9beac.jpg i finally got my own shop after the tornado took my old barn away back in April. this was just after the shop went up in September of last year http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/8232918a.jpg http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/8a00e97d.jpg http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/9c200b1b.jpg the original owner had removed the heads for gasket replacement and noticed some scoring on the cylinders so it had no top end on it when i got it http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/baeea5ab.jpg got it pulled in the shop around 10am today http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/396bedcd.jpg this made it short work getting the engine and trans out today. we took the wiring harness out as well before the engine was removed. had to get a pic of my buddy doing some work. he usually is just a supervisor. word of advice to anyone who has their own shop. DO NOT INSTALL CABLE TV AND A FLAT SCREEN TV IN THE SHOP. it keeps your help distracted too much!!!!! http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/c63a337e.jpg everything out and waiting on being cleaned up tomorrow http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/89ac3ede.jpg |
this is waiting on me first thing on the morning. should be a VERY easy pull!!!

BTW my 90 is a manual and the 99 is an auto. hoping to do the conversion with the harness and computer i already have. got lots of reading to do but i'm sure i will have a ton of questions

Keep the donor vehicle until you are done with your swap. You'll thank me later.
I got 2 TVs and satellite at my shop and I get stuff done :hillbill: Sometimes. :wabbit2: |

had that idea but the 99 frame was shortened 16" to fit a jeep body by the previous owner |

back to the yota progress.
got the 3.4 out of the frame and got it on the stand this week http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/IMAG0555.jpg http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/IMAG0556.jpg got the oil pressure sending unit swapped out and wired, motor mounts on, tapped and used a bolt to fill the original dip stick hole. used teflon tape on the threads and some RTV on the bottom of the bolt for good measure. then took the 3.0 dipstick and guide out and attempted to install it on the 3.4. i got the giude tapped into the block and tried to fit the stock 3.0 tube to the 3.4 but i dont think it is going to work. there is nowhere to mount the tube to the block http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/IMAG0564.jpg http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/IMAG0563.jpg i dont see how this would bolt to anything so i guess i need to find what tube i need to buy that will fit. i thought i had seen where people had used the stock 3.0 stuff in the swap. maybe i am just missing something.... back to the progress. i got both oil pans off and took the 3.0 pan, 3.0 baffle and pick up tube to be vat cleaned. the gasket on the pick up tube was torn when taking it off. is there a replacement i can get from the local parts place or is this a dealer only part? http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/IMAG0565.jpg so this is how it sits till i find out what dip stick tube i need and if where to get the pick up tube gasket |

just want to clear up some confusion on the wiring side of this project. so when i get to the wiring portion of the swap i am going to be dealing with swapping wires in the two loose connectors that are pictured here?
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/53df522e.jpg i am assuming these are the body connectors for the 3.4 and i will need to basically cut or un-pin the connectors and use the ends of my original 3.0 body connectors to make my gauges work correctly. i should be using the ends of my old 3.0 harness to make the 3.4 stuff plug into these connectors. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/ab2f91d5.jpg i know i need to run a wire for the starter from somewhere and also wire the fuel pump relay. i am thinking i will not be altering any of the wires that are in the 3 harnesses plugged into the computer. seems like they should be correct since they are from the 3.4 and will essentially not know they are running the engine in a different truck! |

That is absolutely beautiful. Definitely a gorgeous machine you have there. 5.0s have been my dream car since age 14/15. Always had high hopes that they'd one day bring em back... nice stang you got there.
thanks, i have always liked mustangs and have owned 2 of them both making over 600 rwhp. the last was a 2001 saleen making 751/634 with a built 4.6 running 23 PSI from a Paxton and hit with a 100 shot on top of that. i am much more familiar under the hood of a mustang than a toyota but they all work basically the same way. |
everything that you said is correct in the above post other than trying to get the 3.4 harness connectors into the 3.0 plugs. They wont fit if memory serves. Just cut and solder the wires together.

i meant to say de-pin the wires from the 3.4 harness and put them in the 3.0 harness if they will fit. it not i plan on cutting the last 6" or so of the 3.0 plugs off and soldering them to the 3.4 wires |
i used the t 100 dipstick and just slotted a brass 3\8 plug for the old dipstick hole. nice stang, outclasses my daily driver, an acura integra.

ok, time for a progress update. i got the T100 dipstick and guide installed last week. had my 3.0 oil pan, baffle and pickup tube cleaned. installed the pan back onto the engine and got it all sealed up.
my body lift came in last weekend. wanted a 2" but ended up with a 3" due to a back order. not progress but it is waiting to be installed., today started the part of the project i have been dreading the most. i started tracing out the wiring diagrams and labeling all the wires. the IH1 and IH2 wires were fairly simple to pin out. got all but 3 wires identified today still need to find out what the following wires are for IH1 solid blue yellow/black and i have TWO green/white wires which should be for the stop light. not sure why there is a pair on different pins IH2 again TWO black/red wires that deal with the AC and a RED/WHITE wire that i cant find in the diagrams i'm planning on doing a bare bones wiring job as i dont care for the 4wd light to function or the CEL as i will be using the auto ECU and will constantly throw codes. following Evolta's swap i am planning on using just what i need to get it running IG2 from the '90 to the IG2 circuit wires from the 3.4 harness. Engine coolant sensor from the 3.4 harness to the '90 wire from the temp gauge. Oil pressure sender from the 3.4 harness to the '90 wire for the pressure gauge. (note, '90 pressure sender is used on the 3.4) Stop light switch from the '90 to the 3.4 ECM stop light pin. Speed sensor from the '90 gauge to the 3.4 ECM. 3.4 ECM circuit start relay pin to the circuit start relay on the '90. 3.4 EFI relay pin to the EFI relay on the '90. run a new wire from the STA pin on the 3.4 ECM to the starter itself. |
got away from the wiring for a while and built my cross over pipe. took about 3-4 hours and cost $3 total

got a little more work done
tach mod done http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/IMAG0642.jpg body lift installed http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/IMAG0647.jpg http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/IMAG0645.jpg http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/IMAG0648.jpg http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/IMAG0644.jpg and last but not least http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/IMAG0646.jpg |
well it fired up today on the first try. still have to get all the coolant stuff hooked up and get an O2 sensor installed in the exhaust. it will idle but is a little on the rough side and wont take the gas very well. i think i may have a bad MAF.
