ADD 4 wheel Drive

So i have looked through many builds and i dont think i have seen anyone keep the ADD, everyone seems to be switching to manual hubs.

Has anyone been able to use the ADD? Or know someone who has that i have just skipped over in my research?

Thanks everyone

Love my ADD,but Im all stock and will keep it that way.1990 5spd 4x4,3.0.

I'm sure you can. the difference is the 3.0 is vaccum actuated and the 3.4 is electronic. I guessing it would be easier to re use the 3.0 vaccum set up. keep the VSV on the fender wall. Possible. I like manual hubs and going that route as well.

Mine will have manual hubs. Just makes sense if you can do it as it is less wear and tear on the front components. Besides they look cooler. :hillbill:

I kept mine, I just wired up the transfer case switch like normal to the 3.4 harness and then tied it in to the body harness inside. went wheeling this weekend and work great. I don't like getting out in the mud or slush to look in the hub (we all know that if you lock them in at the beginning of a trail you have to get out in the biggest mud puddle out there)

Kept mine, its as simple as a single wire or two I think.

Yeah it is max 3 wires. Easily identified on the ECM diagram.

Well, didn't do the wiring on mine, but I kept ADD too. It's still vacuum actuated at the diff, though.

I kept mine but added manual hubs. I only lock the hubs in winter if i know we're getting snow. Or at the group meet up spot before a wheeling trip. That way i retain my shift on the fly when i'm locked hubs.

Subtracting the drive flanges does not eliminate the ADD setup.

The motor has nothing to do with the ADD setup. They were vacuum controlled until 2001, when they switched to an electronic motor.

I am confused, are you trying to install 4WD in your truck? Are you trying to install the ADD setup?

Btw even if you didn't have ADD to start with, you still have shift on the fly with the hubs locked. Basically all ADD does is allow you to shift without having to get out of the truck. I always thought the truck had to be stopped too, but I learned if the hubs are locked, you can shift into 4wd on the fly because the Tcase speeds are matched front and rear.

In that sense, my 86 has shift on the fly too. I'll show you some time :)

are you just trying to figure out where you need to plug the vacuum lines?

hamish_18 06-30-2011 10:08 AM

you don't touch your add stuff. other than splicing the transfer case lines in, and the ADD switch from the front. The vss's and wiring doesn't get touched.
