89 4runner swap
I am finally venturing into my 3.4 swap. I have been reading everything I can for at least a year now also pm'd a few of the famous 3.4 swappers on here so I feel I can do this. The all to familiar wiring is still kind of confusing but I will slowly work threw it( asking alot more ?'s I am sure). I am having a hard time diving into the tear down of my girl she has always been there for me but now she is a little tired but if I call on her she is there. We hard a good ride tonight and it looks like this weekend I am going to the point of no return and pulling the 3.0 out. I have every every wire labeled except for the two body plugs which I can't locate a wiring diagram for those? but after I get the motor in I will worry about them. Thanks to everyone on here for all the tips and info to help the less knowledgable do these swaps.

Started today everything is unbolted unplugged and ready to pull and then the rain came. I will try to post pics if I can resize them everything I take is to big.

good luck!!!

Any updates?
|
Sorry for no updates but work has been killing my swap time. I have managed to get the motor out,oil pan,dip stick, valve cover gaskets and intake gaskets done. I will post pics soon.

Slow and steady man and you'll do fine.
I'm watching all the 1st gens 3.4 conversions so I can do mine. :D |
I have a few questions on wiring if any of the great swappers could help me out with. I am using a 98 auto harness with a 96 manual ECM. There are a few wires I can't figure out. The 96 shows FPU ,ACV ,G-. It looks to me that FPU and ACV go to VSV's that are not on the 98. The G- looks like I could splice it into the NE - because on they go to the same place on the 98 but with separate wires. Any help would be appreciated.

Update
I got the motor in today. I am trying to figure out the rear coolant hoses tomorrow since my runner has rear heat. Also my fuel lines are both female fittings.

Black wire on fire wall
My 4 runner has a little black wire coming from the firewall that connected to the back of the 3.0 intake. It looks to be just a ground has anyone used it or connected it to your 3.4?
|
I'm not using mine....
my challenge is to find the VSV connectors....I don't see them on the two wiring harnesses that came with the engine. |

I have always upgraded the ground wire. Grab an 8ga. or larger to go from anywhere on the motor to the body, preferable the firewall. Where the 3.0 evap mounts is a good place since there is a threaded hole to accept a bolt rather than a screw.
If the engine was "installed" like factory with no additional power consuming electronics, why the need for larger ground wires? Shouldnt the factory ones be enough? Thanks |
Probably but then again, the factory motor wasnt enough either hence the need for a 3.4 swap forum.

I understand the concept here, but still missing something...

The motor is in runs good but idles a little high but not all vacuum lines hooked up yet. I am putting the finishing touches on this week. I need some advise on where to weld in the o2 sensors in. My 4runner car was removed by the previous owner. Also need advise on the trans wiring. I will post plugs that I am unsure of.

Cat Removed not car.

o2 placement
Thanks Deathcougar I have two o2 sensor set up.I know that one has to go right before the cat but the second I am unsure of how far from the first I should weld it in since I am not running a cat.Or does it even matter?
|
If you are not running a cat, your sensor is going to go nuts. You need to run the O2 simulator from URD. Without the cat, the O2 sensor will think its running wrong and throw a code.

o2 sensor
That Sucks.looks like I will have to buy a cat.
