3.4 swap / 4x2 or 4x4?

I've looked thru most of the threads on the subject and see alot of info on which years are the best for the swap, but does it matter if it's out of a 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive or not? Maybe I'm just missing the info and I'm sorry to bring it up if it's been said a million times. I realize it would make more sense to get one out of a 4x4, but are there any differences to the motor (mounts, pulleys, intake or oil pan) that would make one work better?

I have a 93 4Runner with the 3.0.

it does not matter

if you think about it the 4x2 is less wiring :hillbill: and only real difference is controlling the dash light

So is everyone pretty much in agreement on this? Just want to be sure a 2wd donor would be okay. I've found a 3.4 out of a 2wd T-100 auto to go in my 1988 4runer 3.0 auto, but I just wanted to see if most of you thought it would work.

My statment was more for the use with manual trannies. I cant tell you 100% about the auto using a 4x2 auto ecu with a 4x4 auto tranny you have. Hopefully someone can give you the answere there!

You should think about a manual swap :hillbill: Best thing I ever did and then I know for a fact that motor setup would work for you.

from what ive been told and ive done a lot of research on this, is that if you put your 3.0 auto tranny behind the 3.4 it wont work that well, you would have to get an auto tranny from a 94 3.0 t100(those are a cross bread between a 3.0 and 3.4 tranny and your transfercase will bolt to it) and use a 96 auto ecu. i hope someone will correct me if im wrong

this is from ors site

You can use an A340 automatic transmission from a 3.4L or 3.0L application. ORS recommends the 3.4L version for a couple of reasons:

If the donor engine is from a Tacoma, 4Runner or Tundra the 3.0L version will not work flawlessly. The engine computer also operates the automatic transmission. There is a different type of output shaft speed sensor in the newer (3.4L version) transmissions that the ECU will be looking for. Unfortunately the 3.0L sensor is also not easily interchangeable with a newer type. This will create an imperfect shift pattern and a constant engine trouble code (check engine light).

T100 donor engines don’t share this problem. If you plan to use the 3.0L transmission a T100 donor engine will work well and is highly recommended.

Keep in mind that the 3.4L version of the A340 auto transmission was upgraded in performance and strength from the 3.0L version and may be worth the additional cost, see below.

In a 2WD applications transfer case issues don't apply and a 3.4L version of the auto transmission is highly recommended.

If you can find a 2wd T100, it'll save you the hassle of finding an oilpan.
