3.4 into a 77 FJ-40/ Help

Have been doing lots of searching, trying to find out what is needed for the swap.... A few specs

98'ish 5vz - r151F crawlbox 2.28 - dana 300/atlas II (still deciding on t-case)

Haven't started pulling the old motor yet, however I almost have all the parts...

First thing I need to find out is how how many pulse vss for a manual 5vz? I will have to go with an aftermarket setup as I need the VSS and cable for the speedo since I want to keep the factory FJ40 gauge cluster.

Another question I have is are 5.29's appropriate for 37's, according to the gear calculator 4.88's are spot on for factory. I figure that brick like aerodynamics of a FJ40 probably needs the additional 8.5% gearing of 5.29's...

2582 RPMs @ 70 (Stock) 31" tires
2583 RPMs @ 70 (4.88) 36.875" tires
2801 RPMs @ 70 (5.29) 36.875" tires

219 RPMS Different from Stock 8.5% deeper

Any input is greatly appreciated...

Do some reaserch in the 3.4 swap section should be able to find plenty of info. Not sure if youll find much bout it being in an FJ but im positive it can be done pretty easily. Good luck hope you find the info your lookin for

Definately do 5.29's with anything over 35's.
It's not going to have much more power than a 2F, why not just rebuild / edd EFI to the 2F? Have the same power with more torque...

Cost to rebuild the 2f (I have every thing to make it tbi) and on road manners make it more costly to get the same crawler gearing etc...

being very conservative on the rebuild 2k should be more like 3.5 - 4 k
marlin crawl box 1.8k
orion 1.5 k

Using many parts that I already have including a 3.4 decided it was the way ahead... and the short length of the engine allows me to cram all this within a 100" wheelbase (fairly easy)

As for power when new, its kind of a wash, the v6 makes more power with more rpms, than a 2f. No denying the shear low rpm grunt of a straight 6...

5vz vs 2F
180'ish hp 125'ish hp
220 ft lbs 209 ft lbs

If my 2f was in good shape I would have continued to just tbi it and go on with getting a crawl box and orion...

I think that the Toyota VSS is a 4 pulse from research however I am not sure as to what kind.

Found this place which may work for me, however we will see. It seems that Marlin uses a 3 wire 4 pulse however I think a reed sensor is what is installed in most toyotas 2nd and 3rd gen and they are a two wire... again not sure here...

http://www.jagsthatrun.com/V8-chapte...ed-Sensors.pdf

Marlin has one but its metric size and thread also doesn't allow for a mechanical speedo to pass through and the guy on the phone know absolutely nothing about the product...

I see two kinds of vss 4 pulse sine wave, & 4 pulse square wave... any ideas...

Spoke with the rep @ Jags that run he stated that he can make the sensor either way,

4 Pulse Sine wave or 4 Pulse Square wave... So I guess thats covered...
