rusting bumper repair? Also hatch rust.

All,

It's not really a Toyota question, but peole on this forum have been so helpfull in the past I cannot resist.

I have 96 Runner and I noticed 2" crack on the rear bumper's chrome.
Rust bleeds out from the crack and there's rusted stain around it.
I am trying to keep my Runner in a good shape and things like that
upset me ;-(

What can I do to fix it?

Oh BTW, I have some rust showing up on the inside of the bottom part of
the rear hatch, I suspect it's rusting from the inside... Any advice on
fixing that? I thought may be dissasembling the hatch to look inside. Any idea how to do it?

Thanks,
Leon

Well, chrome doesn't rust. The metal under the chrome is rusting and will continue rusting unless your willing to get a new bumper or have that one rechromed.
Body work I can't help ya at all. Good Luck!

I had the same thing happen (rear bumper, to about the same extent) on my old '93 Yota pickup warhorse. A little over a year ago I was rear-ended (medium-intensity hit) at a stop light, and it _destroyed_ the bumper... The ol' rusty bar took the entirety of the hit, twisted radically, and literally _tore_ in the middle. Not until it was ripped open did I fully realize how eaten up it had been inside, 'cause from the back / outside and all angles / underneath it looked 'nominal'.

...So my advice -- unless you can prove to yourself it isn't already eaten up inside, replace it.
