Removing front brake rotors on 99 4x4
I don't trust the Chilton's manual (and I lost out on a great deal on a real shop manual), is the brake rotor removal as easy as pulling the brake rotor off the hub?
I have a 99 Runner Limited 4x4. J |
Easiest rotor replacement I've ever done!
I have a few pics I took just for fun. I'll scan them in shortly. J |
Easy as pie
Off the top of my head, tools needed
17 mm socket 3/8 ratchet ( elbow grease ) jack stands floor jack properly support vehicle. remove wheel. ( Wheel can be placed under vehicle for added safty if jack stands fail. unlikly though. ) Remove caliper mounting bolts using the 17 mm socket and ratchet. Pull caliper assembly away from rotor ( toward the front of vehicle ) If a metal brake line is used, you can pull caliper away with out disconnecting the brake line. If rubber hose is use, be sure to hang caliper with a coat hanger to pervent damage to hose from weight of caliper. remove rotor.( May need to hit rotor with soft hammer. If so, spray hub area with lubricant of choice and hit rotor lighty to free from hub. If rotor is new ( thicker then oem ) you may need to compress the pistons in order to get the caliper back on. Reverse these easy steps Tighten lug nuts to manufactor's specs. |
Getting confirmation
I put on a few miles with the new rotors.
The shudder during braking is gone. However, I can hear metal rubbing against metal as if the brake pad is worn out. The brake pads (TRD) were installed about 2000 miles ago. When I pushed the brake pistons inward, I may have damaged one of the brake pads leaving an uneven surface. Could the wrapped rotor cause uneven wear on the brake pad and now it's making this noise? If I get new brake pads, some of you mentioned AutoZone or some auto parts store carry the same brake pads as Toyota. Can I get a part number? Thanks, J |
Well, there are some scoring on the outer radius (driver side) and inner radius (passenger side) of the brake rotors.
These brake rotors were new and installed a few days ago. There is about 75 miles on them. I'll try to post some pictures. Maybe I'll just get new brake pads from Autozone. It's the 2000 tacoma brake pads right? J |
