Leak?
This is all on a:
89 Toyota PU 4x4 3.0 v6 5 speed Ok so I put in a new timing belt, h2o pump, valve covers gaskets drove it and it drove fine noticed oil leak looked like the pan, resealed it changed front diff fluid w/ 80 90w non syenthic gear lube and changed motor oil, i run fully syenthic moblie 1 and have used that for about 20,000 miles before, noticed it still leaks, oil and little bit of anti freze drove it about 200 miles now and the oil is really low on end of stick any ideas??? Ideas of problem: missing relief valve to the oil pump? oil seal on crankshaft leaking? scratched crankshaft? oil pump seals? If you have any ideas that would be great thanks for any suggestions or help |
leaking oil and anti-freeze? sounds liek a headgasket problem... the 3.0s were notorius for headgasket failure

yeah I thought about that but can't seem to find a leak there, it looks like it might be coming from the passengers side, with a blown headgasket wouldn't I notice a signifigant loss of power when I go to accelerate?

Sadly, I'm leaning towards jimabena's diagnosis...head gasket leak. as for power loss, look for a stumble, around 3000 rpm. |
well I felt up by the oil pump and there was alot of oil up there, it was fresh which makes me think it could be coming from the front oil seal around the crank shaft as far as the coolant I looked around and it is driping down the passenger lower A arm and getting on the transfer shaft and getting spun all over the under side, I don't know where it is coming from
As far as the stumble it has a very clean sound, almost like a high pitch hum which gets loudest at 3000 rpms and up Any Ideas? |
Well, there is a coolant line that runs behind the back of the engine. Very hard to see, but it can develop leaks that are hard to detect. The best way to rule ot a HG is to have a gas analysis done. This test detects the prescence of hydrocarbons in the coolant system and is pretty much definitive of a HG leak. But this doesn't sound like that's your issue. Sometimes when you switch to synth from dino oil the normal wear and tear on a high mileage engine can allow the smaller molecules of the synth oil to seep past the older seals. You need more (better) advice than I can provide...

yeah but I have ran fully synthtic for about 30,000 miles before this with no problem so I don't think is the oil grade I am going to replace the front oil seal and see if that helps, do a compresion check and a die test to look for leaks

Coolant - probably coming from the hose that runs along the firewall (top) and then under the air intake chamber (which had to be removed to do the valve cover gaskets). Did you have trouble with this hose when the intake chamber came off, or was it super easy - either way you can end up with a leak. All hoses 'should' pull apart with moderate effort.
Oil - are you sure it's not coming from the corner of the valve cover gasket. The 3.0 is notorious for leaking there. If you had even a small mistake (surfaces not ultra clean, bead of sealant not perfect...) you'll get a leak. Wipe everything clean and park with the front of the truck higher than the rear and see if the oil reappears. |
i think that there is something wrong with my relief valve on the oil pump, has any one worked on this before? I tried finding with it was but couldn't see it, there is no oil coming from the valve covers I can see them, and I put gasket sealant in the corners of the heads. As for the coolant I am still confused because the top hose isn't leaking and the water by pass oulet isn't leaking either

ok this is probably the sadest day of my short 18 years I am going to take it to a shop to get a diagnosis of the problem. What would you guys recomend that I have them do? A preasure test to find the spot where the coolant is coming from, a gas analysis or carbon monoxide test, and find the spot where the oil leak is
Right now I want to have them find out what is wrong and then I can do the labor myself. Any suggestions |

ok so I brought it in a they said the cam shaft and crankshaft seals are leaking as well as the rear main, SO now I have some work on my hands, the coolant leak is a heater hose which is bad no HG problems yeah!

does yours by chance have an oil cooler?
