Jay - diffs/trans question?
Jay,
First of all I would like to thank you for taking time to respond to all the questions you have been hit with; your input is truly appreciated :) I have two questions if you don’t mind. 1. At 15k I had all my diffs & transfer case fluid changed. I bought Mobil1 synth gear oil (75-90W). I took it to the dealer to have the work done (in future will do myself). The dealer changed all the fluids but only put Mobil1 in the front diff and the transfer case. They put the regular Toyota fluid in the rear. They said it must have 90W in the rear and not a multi grade oil. The owner’s manual indicated 80-90W is okay if temp is below zero (does happen in VA but not a lot). Do you have any feedback on the use of Mobil1 in the rear diff? 2. Also, what about the use of Mobil synth transmission fluid in the auto trans? Any strong feelings one way or other? I read that manual transmissions have issues with Mobil1. |
To be honest. Having serviced these vehicles in the dealership since early 1991. I have had no problems with the lubricant we have been using, on any customers or my personal vehicles.
Now, I wont claim to be a expert on the synthetics. But... here is my feelings. ( Puts on flame retardent clothing ). Change your drivetrain oils every 15k miles. (or after each weekend of off roading in puddles and mud) Use 75w90 in front differential, manual transmissions, transfer case, and late model locking rear axles. Use 90w in standard rear axles. ( no moving shift forks, etc... ) Use ATF in the automatic transmission. ( consult owners manual for Type. ) Do people really put all that high dollar stuff in there drive train? Seems a waste to drain it out after one weekend of mud boggin. Im from the school of changing your oil more frequently using the best of the cheaper oils =P Jay *prepares for the flames* :bigok: |
Thanks for the response.
Yeah, I am also in the school of changing fluids regularly (3k for oil, 15k for diffs etc). However, I do use Mobil 1 in the engine and wanted to keep it all in the family, so to speak with all Mobil 1 fluids. I ran regular gear oil in my old Toy truck for over 8 years and never had a problem, guess that should be a good indicator right there, huh? Thanks again |

Ok you got me on that one!

Jay-
my haynes manual says to use ATF in my chain driven transfer case (3.0 V6) and you say to use 75w90. does it matter? |
Doh. Yes it matters, I forgot about that automatic transfer case.
*Ducks* Jay |
