idle problem
 

ok i have an 85 runner w/an 86 22rte, lately after ive driven for a while and it warms up, the idle will start to fluctuate when im stopped. sometimes its just a little bit 100rpm up and down and other times it will get so bad it dies. ive looked for vacuum leaks, sprayed starter fluid everywhere and i cant find any. what else should i check?

try turning the idle down on the throttle body screw ,sometimes if its set too high it does what your diesribing.also check the intake tube coming off the AFM where the little nipple for the crankcase vent goes for any sliting ,mine was split and i used some shoe goo to fix it till i decide to spend the damn 200 dollars to buy a new one.

You can also try to clean the AFM with some electronics parts cleaner.......When they get dirty they can cause the same problem......

You are hitting the ECU's idle cut RPM when the brakes are applied, for more info see:

thanks for the replies, the ECU idle cut seems to be the most likely problem but my idle cant be adjusted any lower than 1000rpm? its been this way since i swapped in a 5spd. i can turn the screw all the way in and the thing still screams, sometimes it will drop down to 900rpm but will eventually get back to 1000 or more. any ideas?

Adjust the TPS to give a good idle setting
Make sure the timing is set properly (5 BTDC w/ the timing jumper installed).
Then make sure there are no air or vacuum leaks in the intake.
Make sure the throttle plate fully closes, perhaps the dashpot is holging it slightly open.

hmm well i just changed out the AFM and unhooked my BOV and drove it around and no more fluctuating idle, i dont know if i just didnt drive it enuff or what. but yeah the TPS i forgot about that i dont have a multi meter plus im not really good with the whole electronic side of things unless im just wiring stuff up.hmm maybe ill teach myself how to do that this weekend, worth a shot anyway toyota wanted $200+ to have them do it. well thanks for the help so far, im glad this thing isnt my daily driver anymore.

oh yeah and another problem has developed, when im coming to a stop and push in the clutch the idle will stay at like 2k rpm and i have to tap the gas to get it to come down. nothing big, but annoying.

Sounds like you need to clean the throttle and possibly clean/adjust the dashpot. That could be the cause of both the throttle sticking open and the high idle speed.
