AT filter replacement on flush&fill

I'm at the stealership yesterday getting crush gaskets for my diff. & TC flush and I wanted to pick up a tranny filter to replace. The parts person told me they dont replace the filter rather they backflush it. I know you can clean the filter with brake fluid but I alson know for a fact you can get the filter and seal at your local autoparts store. Is cleaning the filter with brake fluid good enough? Anyone else with similar experience?

Some of the newer vehicles use a fine mesh screen istead of a traditional paper syle filter. Flush with brake fluid?? Never heard of that. Sure it wasn't brake cleaner? That is a fast evaporating solvent that leaves no residue. That would make more sense to me.

You're right, sorry, I'm actually trying to get some work done today. I think amsoil recomends replacing the filter (detailed on their site). thanks for replying.

After removing the twenty some odd bolts to drop the pan, the 3 to remove the transmission filter is easy. :pat:

The only pain that I went thru was removing the form-a-gasket from my pan. It appears that the last person who worked on it (stealership) thought that would work without the gasket.

While I was unhitching my boat I noticed it was shiny, along with the backside of my 4runner along with this stringy red stuff coming down from the side of the transmission pan.

After that, I decided I could do a lot more than change the oil!

My luck has held, and I haven't had any problems in 15kmiles.

Did an AT flush n fill this past weekend

My brother brought over his 98' runner from atlanta and we did a full flush via the cooling lines. Then we drained the AT pan, remove such pan and filter. The pan had no gasket, just RTV all around. It was a major pain to clean, but we had a gasket and filter from the local auto store. Dont forget that filters for 2wds are different from the 4wds.
