COIL PACK REPLACEMENT 3.4 symptoms, slight skip, results, CHECK YOUR COIL PACKS TODAY

Awhile back I posted about a slight miss I had in my 1997 4 Runner 3.4 Liter SR5 5 Speed

I searched yotatech.com and found others that had the same issues.

This is what was going on with my truck

-varying idle speeds, seems to steadily rise and decrease from 900rpm to 1100, it did this on occasion

-slight putting noise on the exhaust, especially when reving down, and especially noticeable at 1500-2000rpm

-slight miss or skip under WOT, was especially noticeable again at 1500-2000rpm

-truck would pull strong, but seemed a bit weaker

-it burnt the boot of a plug wire, down where it connects to the spark plug, I consulted a Toyota tech, and he advised that when the coil packs go they may sometimes start providing too little spark, but other times whiel driving may spike, which can cause this type of burning in the plug wire boot

so yesterday, I replaced all three coil packs with Toyota ones, it sucked to spend the 200 bucks, but they were virtually the same price as ones from Auto Zone, Pep Boys, or other local parts stores so I went with the original Toyota ones

The difference is unreal, the truck started and ran WAY smoother that it had been and also with no other changes the idle dropped and stayed at a constant and perfect 750rpm or so. No more lugging/roughness at 1500-2000rpm

A decent seat of the pants difference all the way through the powerband, can definitely really see the power difference that I gained with the air intake and exhaust upgrades that I did awhile back

hope this helps some people, if you have any slight skips check all the usual suspects, then move onto coil packs!

Regards, Tim

Tim,
How many miles do have on you runner? The reason I ask is because my 99' limited has 117,333 miles and I am holding my breath as for what wears out next. How long did it take you to replace all three coils?

Thanks!

literarly took me 30 minutes to toss in the new coils and new plug wires

was an easy job, however i have a mandrel air intake which clears the way

my truck has 220 on it, has been super dependable only recently have i started to do upgrades and some maintenance, primarily as preventative measures to nip things in the bud

i knew i needed one coil pack, but said screw it and did all three, as it is common that when one fails the others soon will
