Clutch Install problems
After a hard day of rock crawling I noticed a certain ratteling coming form the transmission area. It sounded like a T.O.B.(Throw Out Bearing), if any of you know what it sounds like read on ;) so I figured what the hell, I'll upgrade the clutch while im under there. so I did the new centerforce went in without a hitch. The sound still persisted! now, when I engage the clutch the sound winds down and stops at any speed... Isn't the Pilot bearing Constant velocty, never stops? I did not replace the Pilot bearing... I know im a fool! I'm wondering if its my Sychnro's on the tranny? anyone have this problem or could help?

The only time the pilot bearing spins is when you have the tranny in gear and the clutch depressed. Are you sure this rattling isn't a loose heat shield or something?
Tranny input bearing maybe? |
If you can hear it wind down after stepping on the clutch, I would bet its the input bearing (like what Shane said).
And when you are back in there, put in the new throw-out bearing too. When you are working on your own rig, its a PITA to do rework, when you are working on a customer's rig, its a PITA to do rework and its free. |
Thank you for the advice. Looks like next weekend I'll be under the belly checking that input bearing. I did check the heat shield on headers and there were a few loose brackets and junk hanging on the exhaust/other places. I just tack welded those down with a hobby welder and it didn't cure the problem. Maybe this is a good time to re-build the T-Case to with lower gears ;) I love repairing but I love moding too! ;)
Thanks again guys! |
