Check Engine Light Again :(

Last friday I took my 94 truck into the local dealership and had them see if they could out why my check engine light keeps comming on. They said they didnt find anything. All my sensors were working fine.

Today when I started up my truck I noticed the light was back on. The truck still runs fine. So my question is, what else should I check?

Hey!
Somebody else in NC! Woohoo!

Do you know how to check it for codes? If you open your hood and look near the fuse box, you will see a small grey port that says diagnostics on the cover. Pull off the cover and use a paperclip to bridge the E1 and TE1 ports. Once you do that, turn your ignition and count how many times your check engine light flashes. If you get 5 flashes, a short pause, and 2 more flashes, that is a code 52. Codes are seperated by really long pauses. Once you pull a code, you can do a search for you code or post it on this tread and I'll try to find out what it is for you.

I know your dealership says there no codes, but you may want to check it yourself for a bit of peace of mind. Also, most autopart stores have diagnostic tools too, but I'm not sure how accurate they are.

You can also get codes for your tranny by doing the same thing. Just count the amount of times your O/D light flashes. Really cool stuff. I love Toyotas!

If you are near the Fayetteville area, I'll pull the codes for you. :bigok:

Well, have fun. :)

Thanks for the response! I was going to take it to Advance, but I didnt think they would have the diagnostic tool for preOBDII toyotas. Anyway Ill give that a whirl tomorrow! :)

Sadly, I dont live near Fayettville. I live in Asheboro, which is just south of Greensboro.

Alright I just tried that out and I got three pause then six.

Im not 100% sure I counted right. How do you know when its done getting the error code? Will the light stay solid or what?

No, the codes will repeat as long as the ignition is on. And are you sure it's 36, my manual doesn't list that code.

Im going to try it again tomorrow morning just to make sure. Thanks for the reply though :)

I got a completly differant code this time. So I unhook my battery for about five minutes and then started the truck and let it idle for a while. The light never came back on.

Awesome! Hope it never comes back on! :)

O2 sensor....

Mine comes on when I need to downshift out of 5th to 4th gear...goes away when I do....just the aftermarket header combined w/ the OEM O2 sensor...

Good luck.
