1991 4Runner tranny drain plug(s)???
My wife has a 1991 4Runner with automatic V6.
I pulled the main tranny pan drain bolt but noticed a second drain bolt in a second pan just behind the main. about 3-4in away. I know what your thinking it's the transfercase drain plug. Well if it were the t-case drain plug why would the filler/check plug on the back of the t-case be lower than that drain plug. I have checked the t-casse over the years a number of times thru the fill/check plug hole on the back of the t-case. Checked so the fluid is at the bottom of the hole. (As per the haynes mannual). I also see an Allen bolt plug about 5in's below and to the right of the fill/check plug. Most likely the t-case drain plug. So Im wondering what the plug in the little pan just behind the tranny pan is? If I do drain it I want to know how to fill it back up. Since I don't see a filler hole around that area I wonder if it will fill when I put the tranny fluid back in. I'm changing the filter, fluid and adding a tranny cooler to the system. I noticed that I have to remove the front drive shaft and sway bar to get the tranny pan out. Nice! These technical Toyotas. They sure jam things together in a small package. Thanks for any help. |
I just looked in my manual and it shows that tranny as having 2 drain plugs. The picture shows the front one on the lower pan, and another behind it.
You are correct about the t-case drain, it's the Allen bolt one facing the rear. The manual is in pdf format, I can email you a copy of the tranny section, or even the whole manual if you want. I tried copying the drawing of the drain plugs to here but can't figure out how. |
Thanks a bunch. :great:
I would definitly be interested in the manual can you send it to me at ctomanek@telus.net I won't be able to see it till tonight. Can you also send me the tranny section to here. clay@option-nfa.com sorry for the two places, one is home (telus) could use the whole manual there but right now at work (option-nfa) I could use the tranny section to get this done. Thanks for the help. :drink: I see your in my neck of the woods. I'm in Burnaby. If you also have some pics of your Yota I would like to see them. They sure run great for a lot of KM's. |
