Hey everybody I’m new here and couldn’t really find a good section to put this in or start it so sorry. I recently rolled my 1998 Toyota Tacoma 3.4 with R150f transmission and transfer case, solid axle swaps with coils, so it got totaled and I found a good deal on a 1999 Toyota Tacoma 3.4 with a a340e transmission 2wd. I want to swap my running gear and tranny to the new one, what is all involved besides fab work on new transmission mount and such, do I need to swap ECU and harness, I don’t have experience in anything like that. Thanks you.

The fab work is of course going to be a given. To make it not throw codes you will definitely need to swap harnesses and ECU's. The harness manual harness should work just fine on the auto truck. Unfortunately the ECU's can't just be swapped as the connectors changed in 98. Swap the harness and ECU. Get all of the wiring diagrams for both trucks from TIS. It's $15 but well worth the money spent. Go through them and map out all the pins on connectors II1 and II2. Once you mapped them out make sure the two connectors are pinned identically between the two trucks. If they aren't you need to move the pins around in the engine harness to match. You may need to add or get rid of some things. Things like the clutch switch is needed but not existent in the auto truck. I'm not sure on the 97 but I know on the 98 the speedo works on a signal provided by the ABS module for autos but (I think) a vss for manuals. That's a connection that won't be there in the auto and will need to be added. It may be easier and worth it to swap the entire dash harness from the 98 into the 97. Might be easier and less time consuming. It really depends on how stock like you want it all to work in the end. If you want it to work like factory you need to to invest the time and effort. If you just want the manual and ha e it runs but don't care about the functionality of anything else then yeah, you can get away with just stabbing in the manual and call it a day.

Okay thank you, so as far as swapping the harness out, does that mean I have to swap the full motor side of the harness, I guess I just need to tear apart my 98 and see what’s all involved, thank you hoping to tactical switching everything in a month or two. Thank you kolton5543

Yes everything attached between the engine and ecu will need swapped and the connection that connect it to the dash harness needs to be modified to the 97 layout or the 98 dash harness needs swapped with it. Swapping in the 98 harness will be pretty easy. The dash harness can be pretty difficult but may be the better route to go from adding and modifying auto harness circuits to work with a manual.
