350 V8 with '88 SR5 5-speed???
 

I own a 1988 SR5 V6 4Runner with a 5-speed manual, however the truck is on its last legs so I'm looking for a replacement. I want to buy this:

but I love shifting gears and was wondering if its possible to mate the 350ci V8 to the 1988 stock 5-speed.

Thanks, not exactly sure what to use. Do you think the stock 5-speed could handle the torque of the 350? What is the estimated cost?

And more importantly, what do you think of the black truck, good deal?

well if you just drove it like a normal person, and didnt wind it up and dump the clutch. then yes it would hold up just fine. as of cost you could get away with spending only around 2,000 or so. depends on what you do.

Totally possible. But its going to be ALOT of work, and money. $400 adapter plate, $300 in clutch parts, drive shaft work, new tcase crossmember, motor mounts, possibly radiator and fan, clutch master and slave cylinders and lines, new accel/clutch pedals, bla bla bla.

Better off buying a good truck with a blown motor, and starting the swap from the beginning.

You could buy that, but why would you want to? That truck already has a TH-350 in it, pulling it out and swapping a Toyota tranny back in would be a pain in the ass. I've swapped several V8's into Yota's and I'm currently working on a 383 LS1 into a '00 Taco. It's no joke...many things could go wrong, and you could just be buying another person's problems.

Your best bet would be to buy a 350 and swap it in yourself into the truck you have currently. That way, you know what the quality of the work is. Here are some key points I'm going to list:

-Pull the whole drivetrain out, you said your truck is on its last leg, why would you want to use a worn out drivetrain behind a 350?

-Advance Adapters makes an adapter to R150's, R151F, and W-56's. I'm assuming you have the R-150 since you have a V6, if you wanted to still use your Toyota tranny...you could rebuild it, and buy the adapter from AA to mate it up to a 350 4-Bolt. The part # is 712561 I believe. It runs around $450.

-However, if it was my truck...I'd ditch the Toyota tranny. By the time you rebuilt the transmission, bought an adapter kit, etc. etc. the cost is going to build up, and you're still running a risk blowing the tranny up. If you want to change your own, I would suggest a NV3500, NV4500, or a SM-465. A brand ing new custom NV4500 5-speed from High Impact (http://www.high-impact.net/transmiss...ear/nv4500.htm) will run you around $2K. That's one hell of a tranny and you may or may not need an adapter depending on what model engine you choose.

-Look at a possible new rear end, and driveshafts. I would suggest a 9", 14 bolt, or D60.

-Frame Re-Inforcements: Demello makes some, and you can box the rear of the frame.

I'm by no means saying that Toyota stuff isn't tough, my truck has 250,000 miles on it and still runs perfect. It's just I'm the type of guy who likes to do things right the first time, even if it means spending an extra couple of dollars or two, and not having to worry about problems on down the road...and Toyota parts were not meant to hold up to the power of a V8.

I have a bellhousing that hooks a ford smallblock 302 to the toyota tranny. I was goin to set the 302 in it but decided not to be I needed more of a drive truck then a play toy at the time. the kit cost me $1000 but it came with pretty much everything i needed to drop the 302 in.

I like the turbo 350 due to the strength/abundance. U have to go with a 9 inch or better cuz with all that power u will have a heavy rt foot.I have a ratchet shifter and it like a stckshift without the clutch.

you know the cevy 4.3 v-6 is alot easier install, not quite as much power but still enough and then you dont have to worry about breakage as much. for the v-8 you need to relocate the whole transfer case mount and then drive shafts and possibly body lift. the v-6 just needs a bell housing adapter and engine mounts, and they even make bolt up ones! and also from what i know is the v-6 actually shifts your CG more behind the front axle thus putting more weight on the rear axle and improving traction and i have seen 4.3's built to 350 HP naturally asperated, there was an article in one of the hotrod magazines a while back that outlined it.

just an idea, i had the same dilema when i first started researching this topic.
