22re into a Chevy Luv

A little different and I am looking for some advice. I figured this would be the place to ask.

I am getting ready to purchase a 22re with 5speed trans, ecu and wiring harness from a 91 2wd pickup. My plan is to get rid of the tired old 1.8 in my 74 Luv and replace it with the 22re.
What all do I need to carry over from the donor truck to get it to run correctly?
I understand I am going to have to modify engine and trans mounts, along with fuel and exhaust. I have seen some pics of Luv's with a 20r and the toyota 5 speed but no info on the swap and no response from years old forum posts.
Thank you advance for any advice and information

Welcome!

I have never seen someone swap a 22R-E into a Chevy Luv, but then again, I have never searched for this swap either.

What you will need will depend on how you go about the wiring and fuel system.

I would definitely not be the first person to ask for advice for this type of swap, but I will try to get the ball rolling.

Because of the fuel injection, the 22R-E swap will be more involved than a 20R or 22R swap with a carburetor.

It might be easiest to adapt a Toyota wiring system to the Luv rather than trying to adapt the 22R-E wiring to the existing Luv wiring.

Here is what you will need off the top of my head. There is probably a few (or more) things I missed.
  • The engine itself
  • Intake manifold with throttle body (and throttle position sensor); keep all sensors that are currently in the lower intake manifold in place, you will need them
  • Fuel rail with injectors and cold start injector; fuel pressure regulator
  • knock sensor (in engine block)
  • Air Flow Meter
  • Ignition Coil with igniter; spark plug wires
  • Idle Air control valve
  • ECU
  • All ECU and sensor related wiring harnesses including diagnostic port/connector, Circuit Opening Relay, oxygen sensor wiring
  • Under-hood fuse box and wiring as well as interior fuse box (integration relay).
  • Fuel pump and associated wiring; maybe even fuel tank?? Not sure.
  • Exhaust manifold, if it still works with your application
  • EGR, if you are keeping it.
  • Cooling fan with fluid coupling, if it still works for your application
  • Starter motor
  • Transmission
It is better to take more than you think you need if you cannot keep the donor truck along side the Luv.
I do not know about the gauges or throttle cable / linkage.

It is best to find a wiring diagram for the Luv and for the 1991 donor truck so you know what is supposed to go where and what wire does what.
This swap will take some thinking to get everything to work correctly, but can be done.

The speedo may or may not be cable driven in the 91, I forget. The cable driven speedo supplies the SPD signal to the ECU. If you have the electrical sender on the trans you don't need to worry about this and just connect the sensor to the ECU.

10 amp STOP fuse supply to the TCCS ECU.
7.5 amp IGN supply main efi relay.
15 amp Engine, supplies alternator.
15 amp EFI, supply to ECU, VAFM, OX, COR. (Think I am missing one here)

Think this is enough to get it running "stand-alone".

This is all based on the 80's model, I don't have the 90 era electrical book.
