I've got an 84 pickup with a 22re, but i'd like to put one of the Turbo'd 22re's in it. But if i recall, aren't they a little different? if so, will it bolt in? and are there any sort of difficulties i'm going to run into?

another reason i'm looking to get a second motor is i'm repainting my truck black and red. and my engine bay is white! so if i get another engine i can rebuild it stoutly, paint it up fairly nice, and when i swap them i can paint the bay also.

 

It should bolt in but you will need the ECU and other parts along with it. Are you wanting to build a RET or modify a regular block to accept a turbo? You have the 22re (EFI) in your 84? Do some searching and you will find a few around here who have the 22RET's .

Your transmission will not bolt up to the 22RET engine....You need the R151F that came behind the turbo engine or a R150F w/ a R151F bellhousing.

No, but both propositions are expensive.
Buy the whole donor truck drivetrain, if possible.

That is incorrect.


Any trans that bolts up to an R series engine (18/20/22R/E) will bolt up to a 22RET turbo engine. The R151 is just a heavier duty trans than the W56 found behind the 22re. Bellhousing pattern is the same. In fact, the auto trans behind a 22RET is the same A340 found behind any other 22RE truck.

So, OP, that means YES you can bolt up your stock transmission to the new turbo motor. Auto or manual. BUT, the R151F MANUAL transmission is a rare tranny due to its lower 1st gear and stronger internals (compared to a non-turbo manual trans) So if you can get the turbo tranny, GET IT, but the auto trans is the same exact unit turbo or non turbo.

Hah? Auto or manual, doesnt matter, any trans that bolts to the 22ret will bolt to any other 20/22re motor. Its the same block, just with some oil lines on it.

 

not trying to thread jack, but if i swap out my orriginal 1985 22re with a 1990 22re will i need any wireing adapters? i have the newer engine and it looks like it might have some minor differences than the 1985 version... any help or links for where to find this info would help. thanks

yep! Its basically a V6 tranny with a 4cy bellhousing!

Thats why it sells for so much. It will let you bolt a stronger R150 V6 tranny behind a 4cy motor.
