1992 engine swap options - 5.3, 3.4, 4.3?

okay so i don't even have the rebuilt 3.0 back in my '92 4runner yet, and i'm already starting to do research on a motor swap, go figure.

sooo..motors i'm interested in.
5.3 vortec V8 out of the 99> chevy's i believe.
these motors have AMAZING power, and don't do too awfully bad(mileage wise) in an ext. cab chevy 4x4 with a kid hot rodding on it pretty much all day (he got about 14 average, stock size tires with 20's, CAI, free flow dual exhaust)
TBI 350 Decent power, not HORRIBLE gas mileage..
4.3 Vortec V6 defintely a step above the 3.0 and 3.4 motors in terms of power, and i have heard about the same mileage as the 3.4.
3.4 Toyota V6Probably the simplest swap, makes "okay" power, gets decent mileage.

okay so what i'm looking for in a swap.

Easy
Cheap
Cool factor..LOL
nice improvement in power
wanting to get around 18mpg in town, and above 20 on the highway

i can give up some power in order to gain a little mileage..as in if the 3.4 gets THAT MUCH better gas mileage then the 4.3, then i could do that lol.

this is going into a 1992 4runner, 3.0, 5speed.

at the moment it has 4.56 gears, 4" bracket lift, 33" M/T's.

it will probably end up with 4.88 or 5.29 gears, 35's, POSSIBLY locked front and rear ( both selectable), bumpers front and rear, sliders, 10,000lb winch in the front. that's probably as far as i'll go with it (atleast that's how it sits "in my mind" a few years from now.)

so i'm looking for a swap that will yield a great improvement over the stock 3.0, and get high teens to low twenty's in terms of gas mileage, with 4.88 r 5.29 gears and 35's, with some armor lol

i know that the 3.4 would be the easiest, but i don't want to spend the time and money on a swap, only to realize it doesn't get good enough gas mileage, or have the power to pull the rig EASILY down the interstate....like i mean i want to be able to accelerate up hill LOL

i don't know much about the supercharger, other than it's like $2000 more to put a supercharged motor into my 4runner..i know it gives nice gains..but idk how it does mileage wise.

i know the 5.3 would DEFINITELY fulfill my power wants and needs, and 'in my mind' it should get close to 20mpg on the interstate because my rig is lighter than a big ext cab chevy...but idk how it would work out wiring wise..or how much of a nightmare it would be...what tranny as well? transfer case should be able to withstand the power..other upgrades?

Dude, you've been here long enough to know that a title like that isn't going to fly.

man...5.3 would be a bad ass swap.....but i would do a 3.4 over a 4.3 any day. with a 3.4 you can use the same motor mounts same bell housing, its just easy all around plus the 3.4 is throwin down 190 ponies and the 4.3 is pushing 195+. i dont really see a need to do a 4.3 swap where you can get nearly the same hp as the 3.4...plus theres always the supercharger for the 3.4 too which is around an extra 60-70 hp right there

i always realize my titles are going to get picked on by the mods..but i never realize that until AFTER i post, sorry Fink.

well the 4.3 that i would put it is putting down close to 250hp..it's bored .060, has a cam, headers, some mods were done to the computer, guy just said that stuff, and that he's got the dyno papers, and it was close to 250hp in a 2wd S-10 shortbed.

i find myself leaning more towards the 3.4, simply because it's THAT much more simple.

I vote 3.4 for similar reasons...it's Toyota and it's simpler.

I routinely get 20-24 mpg on the highway and I'm not being gentle with the throttle a lot of the time. I'm turning 33" tires with ease with the stock 4.10 gears. It accelerates up hill way easily in 4th and will maintain speed in 5th (we're talking Rocky Mountain passes).

5.3: Would be really cool, but IMO its overkill for a yota, and it would be the most difficult swap.

3.4: Most simple swap, good power, milage, and the motor will last a long time.

4.3: Little more complicated than the 3.4, price range is about the same i can imagine, has good power, more low end than the 3.4.

I would go for either the 3.4 or the 4.3, just personal preference on whether to have more or less power and fuel economy, stay yota or go chevy, etc.

Im going 4.3 just for that low end power, it may not be toyota, but it is a darn good motor, there is a reason chev uses it in like every vehicle they made!

i guess i'll stick with the 3.4 lol..if i swap the 3.4..then there will be plans for the SC, just not for a little bit after i get it swapped...just because i think the added power of a SC would make everything a lot better..and by that time i'll be out of college with a decent job, so a drop in gas mileage won't be that bad lol

V8....... That is my dream project I wanna do one day, you can never have too much power since it starts at the HP and works it way down...

Go for the V8!

Practicality is a 22RE, drive ability is how you set your rig up, and power is where you start.

why would anyone ever ditch a 3.0 for a 22re...lol that'd be pretty dumb lol

when i said practicality i meant like..easiness of the swap....ya know like it'd be pretty much impossible to put an inline6 cummins diesel in it..a 4BT cummins would be more practical.

if i went with a V8, it'd be an aluminum block and heads motor..weight savings

I'm in the middle of a 5.3 swap into a 93 2wd standard cab yota
The motor is out of a 05 gmc Sierra
It is the aluminum block motor
310hp/335ftlbs
I am swapping on an ls1 intake and running corvette engine accessories
I am using a 6 speed trans
But a v8 auto trans would bolt on and then adapt to a yota transfer case

I researched swaps for years
This one IMHO makes the most sense
LSX motors are cheap reliable and have tons of power with all kinds of parts to make gobs more power
4.8l v8 vortec motors are just under 300hp and complete under 50k mile dropouts can be had for under 500$$$

4.3 is my vote. Chevy motors are easy and very cheap also reliable. Cant go wrong with the 4.3 CPI and with the AA adapters youll need it can run a 350 later on in its life once you feel like going up in power some more. the 4.3 Is my vote again and I highly highly recomend you go that route even over the v8
