CO - Wheelers For The Wounded Event - Buena Vista
Hello all,
A group of us from CoTTORA are hosting the Colorado portion of the Wheelers For The Wounded Event.
Wheelers for the Wounded (WFTW) is an organization with the primary mission of providing a weekend of off-roading, camping, and in some cases fishing, to our country's wounded military members all over the United States. This will provide them with much deserved fun and excitement as they traverse the most extreme terrain our great country has to offer in a variety of the best off-road capable vehicles ever built.
For more info about WFTW go to http://www.wheelersforthewounded.org/
We are asking any and all Colorado 4 wheelers regard if you have any interest in participating in and/or assisting with the Wheelers for the Wounded event on July 18, 2009. Several folks have already been helping us with the basic plan, but it’s now time to expand and get some additional positions filled.
If you have a desire to provide a vehicle and seats for riders we need to get a few caveats out in the open; most of this is simply for liability.
First, any vehicle participating in this event must be insured, and if necessary, properly registered. All drivers also need to be properly and currently licensed.
Second, we will be conducting vehicle inspections to make certain the basics for safety are operating properly (brakes, seat belts, etc.) Please keep in mind, this is a day for entertaining our guests and is not an appropriate time to test out your new rig or modifications. We want to spend the day wheeling, not repairing!!
Third, we will be requiring all participants to sign a liability waiver.
We are planning to run five trail teams on five different trails in the Buena Vista area. We will be staging at Chinaman Gulch/BV Carnage and will reconvene there again for our evening BBQ.
For each of those five trails we need experienced trail leaders, spotters and tailgunners. We know many of you folks have experience on these trails and we would like to take advantage of that as much as possible. Please look at the trail list and if you know a trail particularly well and are willing to fill one of these position, let me know and we’ll iron out the details.

So an update!!!
(From Eric our Leader of the pack on this)
Hey folks,
As we enter final week of preparations I hope this message finds you well. I am aware of some concerns from our volunteers and I would like to address them in two veins:
First, I have had a few of folks express concern that we cannot guarantee that wounded veteran riders will participate. We are doing everything we can to encourage folks to join us for this event. This has been a challenge on a number of levels, from our being a strictly volunteer and fledgling organization, to strict HIPAA and military restrictions on patient contact. It has been a very one-way communication flow. This week we will be using mass media to raise some awareness about this event. I was leery about doing this sooner, because until last week we did not have our site plan rubber-stamped by BLM and USFS. I did not want to make promises I could not keep, but now we're good to go and know what we can and cannot do. Regardless, a number of the drivers and family members that have volunteered are wounded veterans themselves and I hope we can show them the same support.
Second, we want to show that this event is a success this year and that we are capable of doing this in following years. Something I really want to encourage folks to do is show up and participate, so we can inspire confidence in folks to participate in the future who may have misgivings about the veracity of the program. Regardless of the status of the national portion of this program, we are dedicated to continuing a tradition in Colorado. I know this is a significant investment on everyone, but I think in the long run we will see a much larger pay-off.
Over the last year we have had 95 people express interest with 66 vehicles.
Of those, 75 people with 43 vehicles have signed up to participate.
As of this date 34 people and 22 vehicles have confirmed.
Don't let the momentum fall!!
In the last few weeks we received enough charitable funds and food donations to provide food and beverages for everyone who has expressed interest, and a few vendors have graciously provided gift donations to support the event.
Thank you and look forward to hearing from you this week and seeing you this weekend!
