I want to build a 4x4 camping/roadtrip rig, something small and light that can still fit me and a stove in the back. I've done my share of scheming and wrenching, but I'm new to anything involving off-roading or 4x4 drivetrains. I used to have a little 2WD Yota utility truck, but never did much with it. I'm hoping some of you could have some suggestions for what to do?

What comes most to mind is a 1st gen 4Runner with a VW 1.9 TDI engine, stockish suspension, and a hand-built canvas/plywood camper shell in the back. My only concern with the 4Runner is that it could feel cramped. Also not happy with what I hear of their paved-road manners.

For starters, what generation of pickup or 4Runner should I look for? I generally prefer older stuff, but concerned about parts availability. Is this a concern with older Yotas?

Is it feasible to chop up a pickup, to join the cab and bed into one area? I know on a unibody vehicle this would be a disaster without major reinforcements; what about a body-on-frame?

I would start with a 1st gen 4runner, Most of them ride poorly because of worn out suspension component and some because of improperly done lift kits and huge tires. If you stick with mild suspension upgrades and 31" tires you should be fine. The drivers seat is alittle cramped depending on how big a fella you are, but there is a member here who is 6'7" and he seems fine in one. You would have lots of top options...hard, soft and bikini and there is a ton of aftermarket support for replacement parts. If you want ride quality stick with an 86-89 IFS, but stay away from anything with a 3.0 and automatic trans.

Thanks. Got any suggestions for a slightly taller, insulated top?

Stock seats are probably going to be replaced with BMW pieces; only seat I've used for 24+ hours of driving without cramps and back problems.
