Looking at 2 4Runners

Hello guys, I am new here, but not new to forums. I first want to say I didnt see a member introduction area, but if I missed it please move this thread. Second, I know there is alot of knowledge to be found on a forum and thats what I am here for.

I am currently in talks of trading my harley sportster 1200 for one of 2 toyota 4 runners. I partly wanted to bounce them off yall and see what yall think.

I had a 87 toyota truck with the xtra cab area when I was in high school. It had the 22R and all I did was put on a 3" BL and 35" mud kings on steel wheels. Loved the truck but needed something to travel in for my first real job and sold it for a down payment on a 06 F150 2x4 extended cab. Regret selleing....... But now I have 2 offers on the table, this is where yall come in.

I have a 07 F150 that is my mall crawler, its just a purtty toy. I have a ford escort for my gas saver, around town car. Car cost me 700 bucks, runs like a top, cold ac, has heat power mirrors, only bad thing is that goofy tint.

look good truck, a gas saver car, I never ride the harley because I dont like riding alone. So the Toyota would be a work truck around the house and a play toy in the river bottoms.

Here are my two offers.

1st, I havent seen this one in person but it is a 88 4 runner
Here is what I know about it right now
It has a 4 cyl. 10" lift (IFS) 5.29 gears front/back on 37" co op tires, no carpet, 2 sets of front seats, hurculined around the bottom ( rockers) and PTM

Here it is:

option 2 is a 1987 4 runner, I have seen this one in person
Here are the detail's

chevy 5.3 v8 under the hood with a turbo 350 trans and manual valve body
all pro springs front/ rear ( has a straight axle already)
locked front/ rear ( welded spider gears) with 4.10 gears
high steer chomoly axle shafts in the rear
has a longfeild for the front, front axle has just beenrebuilt
38" swamper tsl
Full custom ( professionally) installed roll cage
custom front/ rear bumpers, 8000lb warn winch in front ( new)

Here it is

I am planning on it being a toy but not too rough on it! I cant decide which one I want. I think I want the one with the v8, it has the roll cage, sas, motor, winch, no body damage other than some rolled finders. everything looks good on it. I will rhino line the interior.

so what do yall think, any thing I should look out for or anything like that?

2nd 4runner ain't much toyota left with the chevy motor in there but be a good wheeler

J.Walton 07-20-2011 02:49 AM

I am leaning towards the 2nd one, the only thing I hate is it has the spider gears welded front and rear....

J.Walton 07-20-2011 04:05 PM

Bump!

I think you'll be happier with the 2nd choice. Its got way more money/power put into it. if you're gonna get one to wheel, the 2nd choice would be the best. replace those welded spider gears with some lockers and all will be good.

J.Walton 07-20-2011 05:25 PM

That's what I was thinking. Thanks for the reply

dropzone 07-20-2011 06:05 PM

that lower bar on the cage will be a PITA getting in and out on a lifted truck on the 2nd one.
Pick up an open third member to get rid of the welded front...

J.Walton 07-20-2011 06:11 PM

I want to get the welds out of both. Don't know if I will install a locker in the front, but I probably would in the rear

87 'runner boosted 07-20-2011 06:58 PM

I like the second one too...I think youre getting your best value there...you dont have to change the gears as the engine has been changed and wont have a problem turning the 4.10's, you have $1500 in tires on there as is, SAS is $1500-$2000 usually, god knows on the roll cage, I think the swap is more even if you take the second one. I will say though, I like the looks of the first one for a "cleaner" ride myself. Both are beutiful though, great finds.

Ya, I think I would get a spray liner and do the exterior in it. Probably going to pick it up tomorrow.

joecan 07-26-2011 05:13 PM

So which one did ya get???

J.Walton 07-26-2011 05:36 PM

I have decided to go with the green one, he is having a motor issue right now. Just got to wait till he gets it fixed.

joecan 07-29-2011 12:56 PM

youll have fun with that beast!

J.Walton 08-05-2011 12:43 PM

Ok guys, he went through the fuel system and replaced everything, then found a vac line that was split and went to the throttle body, it was sucking air which was what was choking out the air/ gas mix and causing the problems! so I will be picking up the green one monday!

J.Walton 08-31-2011 12:41 AM

well both of those fell through. The blue one never got back with me and the green one had a motor issue dude could not get fixed.

Now I have this offer on the table

85 pickup, shortened bed, exo cage, 1200 lb winch, dual transfer cases, 7" lift all suspension, 35 mud terrains.

Problems, leak in / at header, both front and rear chunk leaking oil. Think there are any serious issues with that or just some seals/ gaskets?
