Is this 1990 Pickup Good for A First Toyota?

Hi, I was on here a few months ago asking about a truck that I was thinking of buying. Well, that didn't work out, so I've been checking craigslist and quietly waiting until now. I think that I have found a decent first truck, but I need some more input. Here's the link: http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/cto/4102381942.html

I talked to him and he said that it does have 314,000 miles on it, but it runs good and has all regular maintenance done to it, and he doesn't think that the engine has ever been rebuilt. What's your guys's opinion on it? Thanks

Looks good to me, drive it and see how it drives/sounds/feels.

I would be careful with that chrome tape stuff he has on the lower edge of the doors, that can hide and cause rust issues.

I was thinking the price was high too, but I was thinking of offering about $1500 for it. I could use the mileage to my advantage there, and then I also check out that tape, it's a good point, and then it also looked kind of like the tires are getting worn. Hopefully I'll be able to check it out sometime next week. Is that mileage anything unusual? Like is there anything I should watch out for?

Yes, use the mileage as an advantage, because with that high miles and it not being rebuilt before, it will need to soon (how soon? Depends on what your using her for and how you drive her)

I got my yoda for a grand off because I pointed out things that I would need to put money into, and be willing to walk away, the guy actually gave me a call and gave me a new offer lol

Just make sure you test drive it, check the usaul, check undercarriage for rust and damage/leaks make sure you test the 4x4 yourself AND lock the hubs when you do so! I was a tard and didnt lock the hubs when I was test driving mine but thankfully everything works!

Just make sure you do your homework and if you get her, get to know her! Remember its a TOYOTA and a way of life!!

Id get it but wouldn't pay more than 2500 for it. I wouldn't even offer 1500 if thats all you got. I think who ever it is will laugh in your face at that....Its a toyota. and it has the 4cy. pretty sought after being an extra cab like that.

X2 he's gonna laugh and tell you to get lost if you offer 1500. I'd try for 2000- 2200 if he won't take that go for 2500
3k is kinda below average for a extra cab in decent shape down here where I'm at. They usually go for 5k+ although not with that mileage

tailgate, doors, and the bottoms of the front fenders are rusted out, at the minimum... as well as various areas of the bed... could also be cancer and body filler above at least one of those rear fender flaps.

314k means that it needs a motor rebuild, period... when was the timing chain last changed? he should have records for that.

not worth $2,500, imo, but then again i'm not in the rust belt.

Okay, thanks a lot. Yeah, I was kind of worried that 1500 might be too low, but I was just thinking that let's say right off he says "Well I'll take $2500 for it" then I can tell him that the engine will probably need to be rebuilt, and the interior, plus any rust and anything else I can find, and that seems like it would at least drop it down to CLOSE to $1500. But yeah, I'll probably just have to check it out first. And sorry if this is a stupid question, but what does locking the hubs mean?

On your front wheels there is a dial with a "free" and "lock" on them, twist the dial so the arrow is pointing at the locked position, this connects your hubs (front) to your driveline, so when you put her in 4x4 power actually goes to the front wheels, if they were in the free position power will still be going to the front but the hub woudnt get power.

An extra cab 5spd 22re is not easy to find. If you get it for around $2000 you are doing ok. Dont talk money over the phone. Cash in person always wins.

Okay, well I hope he still has it next week because that is as soon as I can go to check it out. It's kind of making me nervous, though.

I've never heard about the hubs thing. Shows I'm new I guess

manual locking hubs are a good thing. simple. the add or automatic hubs are less desireable.

I'm in the rust belt and i just don't think i'd pay 2,000 for that truck. If it were me, i'd wait and look for a cleaner, lower mileage one for around 3-4 grand. But, if you want it, try to get it down to at least 2000.

Well, this is mostly just going to be a work truck for my small lawn mowing business, probably just used a couple of times a week. I hope I can get it for under $2000, but if not I'll probably just walk away and keep looking like you said.

Ask to remove the valve cover and look at the timing chain and guides. Then do the usual looking at and haggling for a good price. I would not buy unless I could look.

Well, I went and checked it out, but it had a lot more wrong with it then I though it would. I would have offered him about $1000, but he seemed like the lowest he would take was $2500. Anyways, it was a good experience, and my first time driving a stick!

Anyways, I found another one a bit more local, and hopefully I can check it out tomorrow. http://dayton.craigslist.org/cto/4166432033.html Does anyone know what else could be wrong besides the fuel pump that would make it not run?

There is also this very nice 4runner that I'm drooling over. http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/cto/4127458018.html

Excellent that you were wise enough to walk away. Once you can resist "car fever" you always get more for your money.

Get a pickup. Dont ruin a 4runner by hauling lawn mowers in it.
