86 4runner 22re HELP
Ok, so I just bought an 86 4runner with a 22re, 180k, 5 speed. Heres what i have replaced, AFM, TPS, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, new gas w/ injector cleaner. The issue is I have to prop open the AFM for it to start, I have the fuel pump wire crossed so its always hot, I've properly adjusted my idle screw and TPS. Once started it idles high until you pull tge AFM prop out, then it smooths out then dies. Woth the prop left in it hesitates when you give it gas, and runs super rich.
I will be putti g on a coil and checking fuel pressure tomorrow. But any advice would be greatly appreciated. The new AFM having to be held open stumps me. |
My advice is to restore to stock configuration. If AFM needs to be rigged, then something could be wrong with it. See FSM or see 4Crawler's site on how to check AFM. If defective, AND you plan to keep truck long-term, replace AFM with good one.

sound like the TPS too me. The adjustment to the TPS is not super easy to nail down with the multimeter; it took me four tries. Be sure the TPS is correct first, as the AFM is not a finicky as the TPS.

Brand new AFM, had the problem with the factory and new AFM. I got the tps right on try 3. I've rechecked it multiple times. Is it supposed to open itself?

With the tube from the AFM to the Plenum connected, the vacuum caused by the pistons will cause the AFMs flap to move. Is your tube sealed up tight and no leaks?

So UPDATE, i checked the fuel pressure at the cold start injector banjo bolt. 12 psi... I figured i had messed up, so i redid my less than professional fuel pressure gauge setup and boom! Still 12 psi... and on top of that, left the gauge on, with key off and within 5 min, the system had lost 4 psi. Possibly fuel pump and injectors??

Checked fuel pressure directly at pump, 12 psi. Replaced it and boom fixed! :D
