Help engine will not pass 3000 RPM
I just bought a 96 t100 SR5 V6 a/t with 181,500 mi. and it will not go past 3000 rpm. It will shift normaly and i got it up to 80 mph as long as I am not accelarating hard. The moment I floor the pedal it gets to 3k rpm and it seems to want to shift but it will not and it will not go higher as if it had a rev limiter.
I have changed the tps, cleaned the Maf sensor, changed the Camshaft position sensor, all three belts, Timing belt was changed at 117,442 mi. The previous owner did mention that the truck had not had that problem before he let the truck sit for 5 months while he was on vacation. Truck also has a new battery.
I am at wits end. My mechanic and I have been working on this truck for two days and can not figure out what is wrong with it. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I did change the air filter. It had a K & N but it was super dirty, so I bought a new filter because did not have any cleaner. Fuel filter is being changed today. Mechanic said the fuel pressure was fine.
I was thinking it could be the cat but exhaust comes blowing out just fine, but I think it is worth having an exhaust shop checking it out. Is there a way of checking if the cat is bad. I know my corolla gave me a check engine light when it was clogged and the t100 did not give a code for the cat.

The cat comes apart in chunks. As you put more pressure in the system they push back to clogg the outlet tube, not allowing exhaust flow.Take it loose and drive it,

Had the Cat checked and it looks to be fairly new. I did however change the spark plugs and it looked as if they had not been changed. Tips looked rusted and the thread was burnt

Just changed the Fuel filter and it looks like the fuel line was cut and was replaced with rubber fuel lines and the filter was different. After some searching it turned out that it was switched to a chevy truck filter. Needless to say the filter was clogged and the gas in the filter was yellowish in color and my mechanic suspects the fuel filter and possibly the gas tank might be rusted and extremely dirty.
Anyone have any issues like this and any recommendation for replacement parts

The common area fer rust on the tank is at the top where the gasket is. It has a tendency to rust there as road salt will git deposited on there and most people don't wash down the top of the tank. Only way is to drop the tank or pull the bed to check and see.

Not to be picky, but in an earlier post you had stated that mechanic said the fuel pressure was fine. Now the fuel filter was clogged? Fuel pressure on a fuel injected system will be high (40psi or so) and the standard low pressure fuel filter/rubber lines shouldn't work in that setup. I think yer mechanic is snowing you. Best thing to do is replace it with the proper high pressure hard lines and high pressure fuel filter.

Sorry, had to laugh...how would a bigger tank make the truck lighter?
Rubber lines are fine, they would swell up and leak if they were not heavy enough. Many other cars use them with higher pressure.
Drain all gas..replace with new. Clean filter every week until it clears up. If it does n't after several weeks...POR-15 makes a vulcanizing kit for gas tanks that I'm sure would be much cheaper than new tank.
Find a better mechanic, this should have been first.
BTW if previous owner said parked for 5 mos, truth is probably closer to 2 years. IME

My first thought is the fuel pump. Whenever I let one of these sit without running the pump locks up from the alky in the gas. a hard black cystaline mess. It sounds like fuel starvation at the rpm level.
The racer in me says to get the AN fuel lines and fittings for an under hood fuel pressure gauge, but that's expensive just to test the pump. Ebay pumps are cheap...
