Playing with conversion LED's

Hello people,

I've been testing with some LED bulbs for a while. I've a spare tach and wanted to test how the different colors worked. Also tested in an JDM inclinometer.

Those are LED automotive bulbs from www.superbrightleds.com

White:

Results shown are using a 12V stabilized font. The camera is in the most accurated (To what you see in person), maybe with the 14V of the truck running the result would be something like this (Taken with bit more of exposition):

Which one do you like more? I'm thinking I'll choose the white.

Well the green gives you a very Borg look that is a little more intense then the stock set up.
I like the blue myself but you loose the red zone on the tach.
The white is nice and different but seems the dimmest in the original pics.
Maybe if you were to do a combo set up blue LEDs on the outer edges and a white one in the middle to light the tach red zone?

Blizzard 04-11-2008 10:10 AM

The dimmer appearance is due to the tach having a slight greenish touch itself...

I tried mixing the colors but they're not even distributed with the gauges, I mean, the little 74 ones don't light only the fuel, oil, volt and water gauges but also a bit of the surroundings.

Borg look hahaha

I'd go with the blue, it gives it a little more of a custom feel. White is cool though. I agree with aviator about the "borg" green though.:barf:

Nothing wrong with Borg green provided you carry the theme throughout the vehicle... remember... Resistance is futile...
If you changed all the little 74s to the hyper-white [blue-white] ones it might work better.

you should try to find some orange ones...i replaced the puke-green ones in my ride with some regular amber bulbs...non led ones, and i really like it...just my opinion...

Blizzard 04-12-2008 12:35 AM

Mmm... I don't like amber or red tachs, but maybe some friends would want to try, who knows.

As we use to say in Spanish, "For likings, the colors, and for colors, the flowers" hehehe

got pics?

the white looks the best, but the green is better for driving because it is less distracting. that's why most vehicles come only with green lighting on the dash.

I also changed my heater, most of my other dash lights except my CEL, battery and anti-loc light.

I also shoved two blue #194's into my side marker lights.

Nice!

I was thinking of changing up the colors in my cluster as well. But before I go and rip apart my dash to find out how many bulbs I have to replace, I was wondering if anyone has worked on the gauge cluster from the base model.

Thanks in advance guys!

I'd go with blue, that's what color mine are:

I vote blue. I just put them in mine and I love them. They're so purdy. :hillbill:

now for the million dollar question..
How much of a pain in the ass was it to install those??
Did you have to take the entire dash apart, remove the instrument panel and install the little lights???
I dig the blue. If is wasnt too much trouble I might do mine.
Nice job those look great!

toyospearo 05-11-2008 09:05 PM

also.. I have a 94 ext cab 4x4. If I was going to buy the blue what code do I tell them or perhaps they already know.
Thanks for the pics.

Blizzard 05-11-2008 10:32 PM

It's easy to do, you've only to undo some bolts.

For the instrument cluster you need 2 74 bulbs and 3 194 IIRC.
