Need Help With Wire Color Codes
 

Hey guys, I have a radio that's coming from what I think is an '89 Pickup or possibly a Corolla where the wires have been cut. Most of the guides I've seen don't match up with the wire colors off this Matsu˟˟˟˟a unit.

Can anyone help me identify what is what here?

Look up radio wiring diagrams. Most stereos are very similar. Green and purple are usually your speakers.

Okay, I tried following those guides, but most of them don't list the wire codes coming from the actual unit itself. I should've prefaced this post that I'm trying to wire a newer cassette player, to a pre-87 old style harness.

I'm assuming grey has to be a front speaker positive, but it gets confusing in that there's not white/black and a brown wire.

Be more specific.

Are you trying to figure out the vehicles harness or the stereo?

Does your stereo not have the plugs shown above?

Sorry, I should've clarified it more. I'm trying to figure out the wires coming FROM the radio unit.

It's from what I believe was an 89 Camry, so it had the white square plug on it that I removed. I'm trying to join these wires to an older 86 style plug to put in my pickup

Ok so to convert the square to the clipped corner connection.

First you need your volt meter, and second a nine volt battery, and finally some masking tape and something to write with.

Looking at the pin diagram from above, keep in mind you are looking at the face side of the vehicle side of the connector.

Locate the constant ground wire, you can clip your meter (set to resistance mode) onto the pin in the door that turns on the cabin lights. Now with that connected probe each vehicle side wire untill you get a zero ohm reading. Label this ground.

Locate what should be the switched power in the table and connect your volt meter to this position, leave the ground probe in the door or clip it to the wire you marked ground. Check that it switches as intended, key on gives voltage key off no voltage. Once you locate the switched power wire label it. If you have to probe each of the wires it's safe to do just don't let anything touch the chassis or another wire and repeat the "attach, cycle key, check meter" steps.

Now you can locate the speaker wires and determine the polarity with the little nine volt battery. Attach any wire that didn't give a voltage or ground reading in the previous steps to one side of the battery, touch/stroke a wire across the other terminal of the 9v. When you find a pair the speaker will make a a little popping sound. Label these as left or right and front or rear.

Now you need to be able to see the speaker elements, take the cover off and watch which way it moves when you connect the wires for each pair to the battery. When you have the plus and minus in the correct orientation the speaker moves outwards..
