Interesting Starter glitch!!
2000 Tacoma 3.4 5 speed 200,000 plus miles
Clutch safety eliminated .
The truck might have been sitting 2 to 4 days
First time for any problems of this nature
Battery voltage @ 12.5 VDC
Turn key to start Click just one
try again click
Cycle completely to off try again starts just fine voltage goes to @14 VDC
No more issues since so being unable to duplicate the issue If it won`t happen you can`t trouble shoot the problem

I doubt it but who knows, maybe a new Toyota engineer who forgot the lessons of the past. Let's see schematic.

Well the battery is getting up there in age it must be all of 9 months in age .
It can`t hurt to get a new one they are not all that expensive !!
Threw the tester on it gives me the green light under load but 9 months is pretty long for one of my batteries I am happy to get 12 months
Besides the battery people will wonder where I have been .
Might be a good time to get the parts and rebuild the cranky thing as well
FYI it does have a starter relay in the fuse block in the engine compartment not sure I could have heard that
Quite possible I heard the COR pull in which is in the cab on the left side .

I have all the New things Battery
Spare starter with All new from Toyota innards plus new brushes
Got a New Starter Relay as well For @ 50.00 I thought it was a good investment
I thought about getting a complete new starter solenoid but the one I installed the new contacts and plunger looked in decent shape.
Now despite harder then normal starter use Not one failure to crank.
I hate to change things that still are working

Yes of course I do I have the EWD`s for all the Toyota`s I own
First thing I was looking at just what all could not work .
I don`t think I have a Glove compartment light I very seldom open it .
Last time I let someone drive it just a few miles I was putting in a clutch
It might be a Tad far to Come to pick it up
Then I can break that 50,000 mile engine in

Pls cranking system schematic so we can check? You never know. 1989 and earlier were screwed up. Then 1991 was worse. Don't know about your model-year.

Pretty simple circuit .
The coil for the starter relay is energized by the ignition switch through the 7.5 amp starter fuse
The clutch safety switch or neutral safety switch depending on your type of gear box
Might have been a loose fuse in the block
My splice of the clutch safety switch may have come loose after 90,000 miles
The contacts of the starter relay are powered direct from the battery through assorted circuit protection then to the starter solenoid
Quite possible the starter solenoid contacts need some tender loving care the starter has not had attention since the clutch was replaced about 80,000 miles ago
I am brutal on the starting and charging system so I can`t complain

Not sure if this is just typical Toyota or just how my luck goes .
My extra starter happened to be a 1.8KW starter that just happens to be a few inches longer
Maybe if I took the time to loosen the Engine Mount I might be able to get it in .
Upon taking the old solenoid out It was interesting it even cranked at all one contact was just about gone the plunger was so pitted
So I just ordered a Rebuilt starter from Toyota
