High-wattage headlight bulbs?

I just found some 100/80 watt H4 bulbs (actual wattage). Any of you guys run this wattage, do you find other drivers flashing you? How I understand it is, even though the low beam on this bulb is higher than the stock high beams, its the beam pattern that counts. High beams throw light up and around, and low beams throw it straight down. So if the low beam wattage is a little higher, it won't blind people as much as an 80 watt high beam pattern?

Also, is it really necessary to upgrade the harness? I know lots of you have done that, but I calculated the amperage and a 100 watt bulb will only draw about 8 amps, and each side headlight is fused at 10 amps. I know without the upgraded harness, I might not get the full potential of the bulb, but I'm fine with that as long as it does not fry my stock wiring.

I did search on this subject, and came up with a lot of threads about the upgraded harness, and a couple threads that said some people got flashed, (that was with a 90/100 watt bulb though)

Thanks!

kinda like working out and only working on your ankles. i would definately upgrade the harness. i have upgraded it on both my trucks and what a difference it made

oly884 02-04-2006 10:01 PM

I upgraded the harness and am running 90/130w bulbs. Makes a huge difference, and haven't got flashed at all, (I aimed them again with the new bulbs)

dibble9012 02-04-2006 10:05 PM

well, unless it will fry the stock wiring, I will just test the higher wattage bulbs to see if anyone flashes at me. Then I will upgrade the harness if I feel I am not blinding anyone

Did you aim yours downward? After my BL, new harness and 100/55 bulbs I'm getting flashed with them on low.

what kind (manufactuer) bulb did you guys get?

I cant find anything with those kind of wattages. Is the Osram just 55/60?

I plan on buying rogers harness also.

Dr.Feelgood 02-05-2006 09:15 AM

I got mine from bulbs.com. They also have 100/80W. They do require a $20 minimum order. But 4 H4s and a couple H3s puts you over that. The manufacturer is Eiko. Not sure where to 130/90W or ever heard of 'em.

wow, how well do they work?

They are very cheap.

Several posts on here about the reflector not handling the heat from the 130/90's. Stick to the 100/80's max.

yea ive read that. Im just looking for a good manuf. that sells hte 100/80

dibble9012 02-05-2006 11:07 AM

Here is a link to the bulbs I plan on purchasing, 80/100 watt, and they are supposedly a bright white like the silverstars. This is for a set of three, they also have them sold as individual bulbs, but it is just cheaper to get them 3 in a package.

I like them. They're a clean white, bright light. Last year I replaced the stock housings with the H4 housings off ebay. They came some half-blue bulbs that looked ricey and took away from the output. But now, with the new harness from Roger Brown and the clear bulbs it's a huge improvement. It's only since I put these bulbs in that I've been getting flashed with them on low. They are definitely brighter. I'll let you know how long they last...

Ill let everyone know when I get the xenon bulbs from JC Whitney, see how they compare to the silverstars I had.

On another note, does anyone know the gauge of the wires going to the headlights on a 00 runner?

You could get 100/80W if the 100/55 is to dim. You might get flashed more though. I get flashed a bit now with the new harness and bulbs. I was behind a NYS Trooper a week or so ago and the back of his car was lit up like a stadium. I thought he was going to stop. He kept hitting his brakes so I backed off of him. I think my current setup is enough...for me. :great:

4Crawler 02-12-2006 07:17 AM

I like the 55/100 watt bulbs, keeps the low beams low enough to avoid blinding oncoming traffic. I also aim my low beams a bit lower than normal to account for the lift on the vehicle.

Dr.Feelgood 02-12-2006 10:21 AM

I like them too Roger. I should aim mine a bit lower now with the extra 2" and brighter bulbs. 80W would be a bit much and probably result in a ticket...at some point.

update:

I purchased rb's upgraded harness, installed it today. Very easy to install, and as it turns out, I have a switched power lighting system. Well got it all working, and put in the bulbs I bought at JC whitney (the link above). I am definitely returning the bulbs!! At 100/80, you can't see anything on a clear night, I didn't realize they were THAT blue. I am exchanging them for the 100/80 diamond white bulbs, so they should be better. Heres some pics:

dibble9012 03-24-2006 07:23 PM

also, I heard some people complaining that the connectors on the upgraded harness were loose. I just put jb weld on top of the connectors, seals out moisture too! They are completely tight now

For those of you considering roger's upgraded harness, I would definitely recommend it, the quality of the harness can't be beat, compared to any other harness I have seen

Hi All, Noob here!

Hello! I'm new here but not new to H4 headlamps. Been using H4 for about
20 years. First thing I do when I got a new rig is go to H4's

I'm posting because I found this thred while coming the web for info on my
new bulbs. Philips Rally 100/90 h4's.

I'm also shocked that Roger did not give the heads up and good folks to buy from! This guy is fast & cheap : http://www.rallylights.com/hella/bulbs.asp

And if you need really nice bulbs from Europe? this woman named Janet is a
sweetheart and ships fast and free : http://www.autolamps-online.com/home.htm .

What I've found is this, Hella 130/90 look great but last about 6 months(tops).
If you need stock wattage and want a little better light quality, can go wrong with Philips VisionPlus 50%, GE megaLight plus 60% are a close 2nd.
The visionPlus has the whitest light out of all of the +30% and +50%.

I'm hoping the Rally 100/90's will last over a year, if they dont, I'll go back 2 the Vision Plus.

Good Luck :soap:
