Cluster swap issues

Hi all,

I ordered a new cluster with a tachometer off eBay for my 91 pickup 22re 4x4 m/t. I received the cluster and new oil pressure sensor.

I installed the new cluster, no oil pressure sensor yet installed. Hooked it up and as soon as I turn the key to aux before starting. The tach gauge jumps up to 3k rpm. When I start the truck the tach does not move.

I shut the truck down, tapped on the plastic and the tach fell back to zero. I read some articles that you need to attach the cluster to the coil ground an then connect to the “P” on the cluster, which I did as seen in postures but with no change to behavior of tach.

Am I missing something, or did I just receive a bad cluster?

Thank You!

Tach stuck at 4K an not moving. Also, oil pressure gauge stuck on high.

Not sure what the blue splice is for, that was done on the Truck already. I connected mine at the terminal.

Where I connected my wire to the negative terminal.

Connection at back of cluster

Any information would be greatly appreciated. I would love to wrap this project up this weekend or at least understand if it’s just a bad unit an get it back to the seller before 30days are up and I’m stuck with it.

much appreciated

I've never had to run wires for a cluster swap. It was plug and play for the tach. As far as the oil pressure gauge, did you swap the sending unit with the correct type for a gauge? The sending unit for the idiot light is different.

I have the same behavior with it without that wire to the coil. The tach goes to 3k as soon as key is turned to aux

At this point, I am at a standstill. I am not sure what else it could be to get the tach the other gauges to function properly. Any suggestions or second set of eyes who have recommendations? Are there any good forum posts regarding electrical testing of the clusters and connectors that can be done with a meter?

Sounds like your dash harness doesn't match the pin map for your cluster.

If you read through the very long thread you will find two manufacturers marks on the flexible circuit, and from memory these use different sensor/senders in a few places based on year and model.

They should be clearly marked with a Toyota part number which is traceable to a vehicle. How about some pictures.

Also worth looking for loose connections and circuit damage.

Hi Co_94_PU what thread are you referring too? In my original post, I posted 4 images. Are you guys unable to see the pictures?

Your pictures are useless for what I asked for, the Toyota OEM markings.

While you're getting part numbers, trace that "P" track on the circuit board back to the plug and see if there is already a wire there then if there is you want to find out what it's connected to.

The really long thread...

Ah yes, I will get pictures of the cluster. I will also take a a closer look at that P track an report back.

Hi Co_94_PU here are some pictures of the cluster. You can also see the oil pressure gauge is on H without even having the cluster plugged in. Tach is on zero, but once plugged in goes up to 3-4k

Just an update. I seem to have gotten the tach to work, but it does not seem to be in sync at all with actual rpm. I am cruising at 70 in 5th gear at 2000 rpm. Additionally, an added bonus is the speedo still does not work.

Oil pressure gauge after Cluster upgrade is too low

Please Help me!
I Have 87 Pickup DLX 4x4 model and recent upgrade the cluster from SR5 with tachometer.
Replace the oil pressure sending unit and notice the oil pressure gauge when idling is almost
to the bottom and when accelerate it's increase to 1/4. I know my engine oil pressure is normal.
Do I have the incorrect sending unit? With should the correct Toyota PN.
(My cluster came from 88 3.0 V6).
I use
Toyota PN 83520-55011 and 83520-35032 sending unit with the same result.

Does anyone know if the part in the transmission which drives the speedo cable is replaceable without opening the trans? I think this is the culprit for my speedo still not working.

Was it working before the swap?

You have a cable driven speed guage, there are two sizes. It's been awhile but I recall there being an insert on the cluster side, but I don't recall if I used it or not.

it was not working before the swap. The guy I bought it from said he put a new cable in an tjat did not fix the problem. I checked the cable an it is new but all the clusters I connected to, Speedo did not work. I was wondering if whatever is inside the transmission might be the culprit cause I’m not sure what else would be.

it’s an old thread but hoping to get a response on how you got it working I’m having the same issues...
